JOHN KELLY – Congratulations to John who ran his 99th Senior race at the last Metropolitan League, and he is intending joining our other two Centurions at the next race at Wormwood Scrubs on 8 February. John’s first race was on 16 December 1978 (Aged 25) at Woodford, where he finished a respectable 48th (27.00) and was Shaftesbury’s first man home. Other SBH runners on that day were Russell Devitt, Gerry Elmore, John Hutchinson, Dave Mashiter, Ken Tollady, Crosby Walker and Doug Walsh.

The next member of the 100 club should be Philip Cunningham who has now run 94 races. So all you U17/U20 runners are probably looking forward to joining the 100 club in around 2040.

It sounds like a good opportunity. The Training Camp is supervised by JON LENNARD, one of our Club Coaches who now spends the majority of his time in Cyprus.

NEWS FROM DOWN UNDER – No it is not that we have won a cricket match, Gerry Elmore has updated me about former Shaftesbury member Brittany McGowan now aged 22. Last year she recorded times of 4:15.60 for 1500 metres and 2:06.03 for 800 metres. She is Australian but spent some years in England where she and her sister Courtney attended Dame Alice Owen’s School. She ran for the club in the 2003 and 2004 track seasons recording 2:25.2 for 800 metres, 4:56.7 for 1500 metres and 10:52.1 for 3000 metres aged 13. She is well remembered for racing wearing a distinctive headscarf in support of her sister who had received treatment for a very serious illness. Happily Courtney, who also competed for Shaftesbury, recovered and is with the University of Canberra National Institute of Sport Studies. Brittany has competed for Australia at the World University Games.
