BRITAIN WIN 50 EUROPEAN MASTER GOLDS IN TORUN, POLAND INCLUDING FIVE FOR CLAIRE ELMS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Britain won a half century of gold and 165 medals at the championships which featured a full range of indoor events starting at the M35s and all the way up to the M95s plus winter throws and a cross- country and marathon.

The most successful UK athlete in terms of golds was W60 record-setter CLARE ELMS who was the only athlete in Torun to win the 800m, 1500m, 3000m and cross-country quadruple and had the Euro Masters had a 10km and half-marathon like the World Masters and not a marathon, then she probably would have attempted even more. The day after her 1500m win, she was competing for her club Kent AC in the area road relays in Milton Keynes.

Mother of four girls, NIA RUTTER, who has appeared in Gladiators in the past, won two golds and seven medals to be the most bemedalled Brit overall. In terms of records this time, the most successful Briton was HELEN GODSELL, who set a W70 world mark at 200m and an European record at 60m. IRIE HILL improved her own world mark in the W55 pole vault while M55 Darren Scott at 200m and W70 Caroline Powell at 400m, set European records.

The biggest name there was DWAIN CHAMBERS who won the M45 at a canter in his first masters championships and the former world indoor champion says he will be back for more. Given his past misdemeanour, some believe he shouldn’t be getting the attention, but his presence was welcomed by the athletes and his races were the best attended and it gave a buzz to an event that otherwise would have been largely ignored by the media.

Britain’s most successful event though was the hurdles with seven victories including four successive golds for the men.

The Poles had a few recent internationals competing and with home advantage and filling almost every event they won 102 golds and 250 medals though Germany got 261 medals and 94 golds. Spain were unusually the third most successful nation with 56 golds but Britain won 37 more medals than the Spaniards.

KOJO KYEREME WINS A GOLD AND SILVER IN TORUN, POLAND – KOJO sent me an update on his excellent performances in Torun. Firstly on the 20 March the M45 800m took place, with KOJO drawn in Heat 2 and finished 2nd (2:10.96i),the Final took place the next day and was a close race with RAMON GONZALEZ of Spain taking the Gold medal (2:01.87i) with KOJO taking the Silver medal (2:02.48i).

The M45 1500m heats took place on the 22 March with KOJO drawn in Heat 2 and finished 4th (SB 4:25.89i), the Final took place the next day, with KOJO looking refreshed, he ran an excellent race and took the Gold medal (SB 4:04.01i) taking 21.88 seconds off his H2 time, and is ranked UK No.1 V45 in 2024, getting revenge on GONZALEZ who finished 3rd (4:06.59i).

The Museum of World Athletics is creating a display of magnificent mile-related memorabilia in Oxford on May 6, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first sub-four-minute mile will feature a number of vintage items thanks to the Museum of World Athletics (MOWA) and the global governing body’s Heritage department. There will be a display at Iffley Road in Oxford from Saturday May 4 to Monday May 6 and it will include…

In total the 17 athletes above include seven Olympic and five world 1500m champions and seven world mile record-breakers, the first man to go sub-3.30 for the 1500m, the first men to go sub-4 in the mile indoors and outdoors, the first woman inside five minutes, the current outdoor world record-holders for both the men’s and women’s miles, the women’s indoor 1500m record-holder, and four runners, each world indoor mile record-breakers, who have between them won 20 Wanamaker Mile titles. The Bannister Miles event on May 6 will see a mass community mile on the roads plus a series of BMC races on Monday afternoon. You can find out more here.

This follows the recent Museum of World Athletics event in Glasgow city centre earlier this month where, among other things, COE announced the awarding of a World Athletics Heritage Plaque in the posthumous category of ‘Legend’ to ‘The Flying Scotsman’ ERIC LIDDELL. The presentation of the plaque took place in front of an invited audience of 150 guests that included 1980 Olympic 100m champion ALLAN WELLS and 2000 Olympic heptathlon champion DENISE LEWIS, who earlier in the ceremony had made donations of historic clothing and shoes from their competition careers to the Museum of World Athletics.

MALAYSIA REJECTS CHANCE TO HOST 2026 COMMONWEALTH GAMES – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

The Asian country last hosted Games in 1998 and was offered £100m to host the 2026 edition. Malaysia has rejected the opportunity to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, meaning that it could be cancelled for the first time since World War Two. The Malaysian government was offered £100m by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) but that was regarded as “insufficient” and the time frame was also too short. Malaysia’s sports ministry said the offer “would not cover the overall cost of hosting a large-scale sports event”. Malaysian government spokesperson FAHMI FADZIL added: “If we had a longer time, we would definitely do it, but because there’s such a short time, we definitely can’t do it. “When we assessed the viability of hosting the Games, the length of time needed and the cost was seen to be particularly prohibitive.”

The Australian state of Victoria was the initial host of the 2026 Games but pulled out last summer due to rising costs. Gold Coast, which hosted the Games back in 2018, then stepped in but they themselves withdrew last December, citing the same issues.

With five out of the past six editions having been held in either the UK or Australia, a change of scenery would’ve been a welcome sight for organisers, who will now just hope to keep the Games alive. That’s because the Canadian province of Alberta – the initial host for 2030 – also backed out last year, with 2030 being the 100th anniversary of the Games. It means the Commonwealth Games doesn’t have a host for either 2026 or 2030 and questions will now be asked if Birmingham 2022 will end up being the last ever edition. Over 5000 athletes from 72 nations competed at Birmingham 2022, almost all of which are former territories of the British Empire.

CODES OF CONDUCT – SBH have now adopted the UK Athletics (UKA) and the Home Country Athletics Federations (HCAF) Codes of Conduct which set out national standards of conduct for all clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers and athletes in the sport.  The purpose of the codes are to clarify what behaviours are acceptable and unacceptable, the standards of practice expected and the basis for challenging and improving practice.  The Codes are similar to our previous Codes of Conduct which were part of the previous ClubMark scheme.  All club member and anyone undertaking a relevant role must agree to abide by the codes of conduct. CLUB HOODIES– With well over eight hundred hoodies already in circulation, this is your opportunity to join the club. The bright red hoody is made to order and has your name embroidered on the front along with the club badge and has the Club name on the back. We now have 2 styles, the original pull over style at £37 + P&P or the new one with a full zip at £40 + P&P.

ACCESS TO SBH CLUBHOUSE – The new Keyholders to the outside door are TY HOLDEN, CLYDE GORDON, NEVILLE THOMPSON, GREG THOMPSON, COLIN GODFREY and YAMILLE ALDAMA who all use the Clubhouse outside of normal stadium opening hours. GEOFF MORPHITIS and DAVE BEDFORD will also have a key. All other key fob holders can continue to gain access to the clubhouse via the (New) West Stand Entrance and the Trackside Door to the Clubhouse.

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. Can you please let me know if you do NOT want your photograph to be published. Also, I would appreciate if you could send me any photographs, which I can then publish on the website and newsletter.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION – Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

SBH MIDWEEK JUMPS CLUB AT STONEX STADIUM – The current arrangements until further notice are that Pole Vault training is on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 18.30pm to 21.00pm. High Jump training is on Wednesday’s from 18.45pm to 21.00pm.
