UK YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE UPPER AGE-GROUP FINAL – Took place last Sunday at Bedford
It was a really good day of inter club athletics featuring the top 8 clubs in the UK. We had some fantastic performances and the details are in the results summary below. Let’s try and pick out one or two highlights.
The throws were a good source of points where GEORGE EVANS had a great day winning the U20 Discus in a new PB of 59.05m as well as the U20 Shot consolidating his number one ranking in these events and then went on to win the ‘B’ string Hammer with a new PB. Consistent contributions from BILLY PRAIM-SINGH (Hammer, Shot and Javelin). A surprise win came in the U17 Triple Jump where ABBAS ADEJONWO had a massive PB of 13.99m.
The outstanding athlete in the U20 Women was EAVION RICHARDSON who had a dream day with PBs in the 100m, Long Jump and Triple Jump giving her two 2nd places and a 1st. The women’s team generally suffered from injuries and late withdrawals with illness. Nevertheless, we had ‘A’ string wins from PHILIPPA DAVENALL (U20 Hammer). ISABEL DEACON (U17 Pole Vault) and JESSICA EMERY (U17 Discus) and in the ‘B’ from RACHEL CARTER (U17 80m Hurdles) and FIONA MCQUIRE (U20 Discus). ‘A’ string silver medals were won by ELLIE BAKER (U20 1500m), DIONNE MILNE (U20 Discus) and MEGAN MCINNES (U20 Pole Vault).
On the track, GERALD MATTHEW once more proved himself to be a fantastic club man and an ace competitor. A silver in the 100m, a gold in the 200m as well as anchoring our 4 x 100m team to a season’s best victory. Hard work was the team ethic throughout the afternoon. We had a further surprise win in the U17 100m when DITA JAJA equalled the League Record with 10.76.
Endurance has been the historic centre of much of the Club’s success and this meeting was no different. JEREMY DEMPSEY ran out of age group for the U20s and once showed his excellent racing brain in winning the 3000m and coming 2nd in the ‘B’ string 800m before picking up a bronze in the 4 x 400m. HAMZA KADIR, our recent crowned England 1500m champion was in impressive form, not only winning his speciality event the 1500m but also picking up a silver in the 800m and a bronze in the 4 x 400m. However, the athlete of the day has to be GEORGE GROOM, fresh from his victories in the England Championships and the UK School Games on Friday, he won the silver medal in the 400m Hurdles and then took double gold in the 3000m and in his speciality event, the 1500m Steeplechase.
Overall a brilliant team performance which saw the club secure 3rd place overall with the men winning their match and therefore qualifying for Europe in 2017.
