GERALD ALTERMAN – The following was written by ROSALIND ZEFFERTT and was published in the Jewish Chronicle recently.

I first encountered GERALD ALTERMAN at a busy indoor athletics meeting five years ago. Amid the chaos of competitors preparing for their races, his was a voice of calm authority, interspersed with friendly greetings and a reassuring comment here and there to nervous young athletes.
Yet only a few months earlier, GERALD had been carrying out the same role at the Olympic stadium, marshalling the likes of Usain Bolt. “I approach every meeting in same way, to the same standards, whether it’s local schools or the Olympics,” he said. “That’s the way the youngsters learn.”
A member of Woodside Park synagogue in London, GERALD was born in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, where shul services were held in his grandfather’s home. He went to school and cheder locally and later qualified in law, before moving into a career in IT.
He was invited to become a race starter in 1981 by Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, where his twin daughters trained. “There weren’t any courses then,” he remembers. “I just read a book about it, got a gun licence and bought two pistols from the local gun shop. My first meeting was at Copthall (now Allianz Park), and I really enjoyed it.”
GERALD’S first international meeting was the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. “I was in the first call room, getting everyone signed in and checking their spikes and race numbers. It’s one of the best roles, because you get to interact with the athletes. And it’s a lot more relaxed than the second call room, which is much quieter; final checks are done, and the athletes chill and get in the zone.”
At the 2012 Olympics, GERALD was again chosen for the first call room, and was assigned to none other than BOLT. “BOLT had his Gatorade. I knew his plan would be to take a swig and return it to his bag with the label facing the camera. But the brand wasn’t an official Olympics sponsor, so I took the bottle from him. He wasn’t happy and protested, ‘You just cost me $1000’.” ‘You can afford it!’ I replied.
That incident prompted BOLT to complain publicly about “petty” officials at the Games. “But athletes know full well what is and isn’t allowed and they try it on, like hiding mobiles in rolled-up socks. BOLT apologised to me later and told me he regretted what he’d said.”
More recently, GERALD was chief starter at the inaugural Invictus Games in London, and these days his skills are more in demand than ever. “The number of officials nationally is dwindling, and there is a shortage in all disciplines. We need more volunteers to get in touch with England Athletics and become involved. They will be welcomed. And it is far quicker to qualify now than when I started.” There are still very few Jewish officials, and GERALD believes he is the only Jewish race starter.
Outside of athletics, GERALD is a senior first aider, including volunteering twice monthly at Mill Hill JACS, where his sporting connections brought in friend and Paralympic multiple gold medallist TANNI GREY-THOMPSON as a guest speaker.
Now 78, GERALD has no plans to slow down. “I’ve always said that when I feel I’m no longer working at my best or I don’t enjoy what I do any more, I’ll stop. But I don’t see that happening any time soon.”
GERALD will be the start referee at the Muller Anniversary Games on the 29-21 July at the London Stadium.

GB 4x400m RELAY TEAM RECEIVE UPGRADED SILVER MEDAL AT THE RECENT EUROPEAN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – The following article was recently published on the British Athletics website.
Before the article this is a synopsis of LEE MCCONNELL and MARILYN OKORO’S career with Shaftesbury, LEE 1993-2013 and MARILYN 2000-Current.

LEE started off her athletics career as a high jumper with a personal best of (1.88m) she soon switched to the 400mm where she made rapid progression. In 2002, LEE won Silver the Bronze individual medals at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships over 400m, and was fourth in the World Cup, setting a lifetime best of (50.82). The following season she enhanced her reputation as being a championship performer by reaching the final at the World Championships in Paris, placing seventh.
After reaching the semi-finals at the 2004 Olympic Games, she decided to switch to the 400m hurdles but despite having the potential to be a world-class exponent at that discipline, the switch did not fully materialise but he did win a Commonwealth bronze medal, setting a lifetime best of 55.25. McConnell still remained an invaluable member of the British 4x400m, greatly contributing to successive bronze medal winning performances at the World Championships but she was not fit for the Olympic Games 4x400m relay in Beijing, having to withdraw through injury.
2009 started off well for her, but injury curtailed her performances and although a member of the 4x400m relay squad at the World Championships it was not until her last race of the season in the Shanghai Grand Prix that she managed to run somewhere near her potential with a season’s best of 51.45. 2010 started brightly with a convincing win in the European Championships Trials at Birmingham, but a below-par run in the championships in Barcelona where she finished in fourth place in her heat and was also just outside of the medals at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
LEE’S Outdoor High Jump of (1.83m) and Indoor High Jump of (1.75m) are still current U20 Women’s club records. Her Outdoor High Jump of (1.88m) and 400m (50.82) and Indoor High Jump of (1.83m) are still current Senior Women’s club records.

MARILYN had a great 2008 campaign, running sub-2:00 on 10 occasions, and was disappointed to exit at the semi-final stages at the Olympic Games after setting a lifetime best of (1:58.45) at Crystal Palace three weeks prior to Beijing. However, the former lacrosse player responded with a string of impressive performances on the European circuit and in her last race of the season in Shanghai, she smashed her 1500m PB by nine seconds. As well as showing great strength over 800m and 1500m, MARILYN has enjoyed success with Britain’s 4x400m squad in recent seasons and at the 2006 AAA U23 Championships, the 24-year-old defeated the future world and Olympic champion CHRISTINE OHURUOGU.
She started the 2009 season well, winning the Aviva Glasgow International and the Aviva Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix, when her winning time was narrowly outside KELLY HOLMES national record of (1:59.21), and came second at the trials in a sub-53 clocking for the 400m. A tactical misjudgement left MARILYN out of the medals at the European Indoor Championships, when she blasted through 400m in (56.10) and 600m in (1:26.39), which was inside world record pace but then paid the price for her over exuberance and just before the line her legs gave way and she ended up crawling across the line in (2:03.30). She amazingly returned later that afternoon for the 4x400m relay, where she anchored Britain to a silver medal with a gutsy sub-53 seconds last leg. Her outdoor campaign never really took off and had only one sub two-minute clocking which was at the Paris Golden League. However, despite this, she still reached the final of the World Championships in Berlin where she placed eighth and she ended her year with her indoor performance as her best time of the year. 2010 saw her fight to get back to full fitness after injury and although she made the team for the European Championships was unable to regain her best form although she had the satisfaction of picking up a bronze medal as a member of the 4x400m squad. 2011 saw a mixed year for her after regaining fitness late in the season after injury curtailed her preparations with a last-gasp qualification for the World Championships in Daegu.
Outside of athletics she is a keen gospel and jazz singer and has a degree in French and Politics from the University of Bath. She can also speak Spanish and the Nigerian dialect of Igbo.
MARILYN’S Outdoor 400m (52.02) and 800m (1:59.75) and Indoor 400m (54.99) and 800m (1:59.87) are still current U23 Women’s club records. Her Outdoor 800m (1:58.45) and Indoor 800m (1:59.27) are still current Senior Women’s club records.
Photograph of NICOLA SANDERS, MARILYN OKORO, PERRI SHAKES-DRAYTON and LEE MCCONNELL after their medal ceremony

Memories of one of GB & NI’s most successful European team performances ever were revived last night in Glasgow as British athletes received a medal upgrade from the European Athletics Championships that took place in Barcelona in 2010.
The British women’s 4x400m relay from the 1 August 2010 originally took bronze behind Russia and Germany as part of a memorable medal haul at the championships. GB & NI were upgraded to silver from bronze following the subsequent disqualification of Russia.
NICOLA SANDERS, MARILYN OKORO, PERRI SHAKES-DRAYTON and LEE MCCONNELL were presented with their silver medals in front of a packed Emirates Arena ahead of the Saturday evening action at the European Indoor Championships.
Speaking after, PERRI reflected on her reunion with the 2010 team:
“What’s really nice is that it’s the same medal – and it’s nice because Barcelona was my breakthrough year, it was in Barcelona 2010 when I got bronze in the hurdles, so it means more,” she said.
“It’s funny because when we were going to get our medals we were all lined up and I didn’t hear the instructions on what to do, but NICOLA – when I was younger I remembered was always the one to give me instructions – and I’d take on what she’d say – and that was the same today, I just followed her lead. Although we’ve all got older I was still the youngest up there and in the relay team.
“They’re mums now, I’m about to get married. We’re all getting older but we’re still joined by that one thing – that passion and love for athletics!”
LEE, who ran the third leg in that race revealed how crucial the true result was for athletes competing:
“You want to get the medals you deserve at the time. It’s the medals in these performances that make you grow as an athlete, that makes you motivated going into the next winter, it’s what gives you the confidence the following season to race. Therefore, your confidence is knocked because you aren’t getting the results you might have expected you could deliver, yet you are delivering it’s just that someone else is cheating to finish ahead of you.
“But coming here to my home town where I trained – I trained here for all my medal performances, so it’s nice to get it here if it’s going to be somewhere!
“It’s a great team that the women’s 4x400m had over the years and we should have probably achieved more but other reasons meant we didn’t. I have days when I am quite annoyed with my career and think I could have done more, but there are and days where I’m quite satisfied with it.”
NICOLA SANDERS and MARILYN OKORO spoke to British Athletics TV soon after. Watch it here.

CLUB CONNECT RELAYS VIDEO – Video of our Under 17 team of NICHOLAS SHAW, TARIQ WILD, MICAH FORBES-AGYEPONG and ANDREW NICOLAOU who at the Club Connect Relays in the Olympic Park on 22 July, broke the U17 Men 4x100m relay club record with a time of (42.28)

A WARNING REGARDING OPEN MEETINGS 2019 – I spoke recently to 2 of the organisers of open meetings, regarding whether there was a closing date for their meeting, especially as now entries are online only. Their response was when a meeting opens on the online system, there could be a 100m event that takes place between 19.00pm to 19.45pm, they would have ascertained that between these times there will be 8 races. Once the 64 entries for those 8 races have been filled, the event is therefore closed. Therefore, there could be a chance that an event could be closed 1 Week or 2 weeks before the meeting date. Therefore, please beware of this.

WATFORD OPEN MEETING – They currently have a problem with tree roots encroaching on one end of the track. They have a meeting with the contractors early next week to finalise when the works will be completed. This may or not affect the 17 April meeting in which they have 200m and 400m, therefore these events may change as the roots affect the 4 outside lanes. Will get an update next week.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
