WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS
DAY 6 – 20 JULY
KYLE LANGFORD was drawn in Heat 2 of the 800m. KYLE ran an excellent race, being in 7th place at the bell, he then moved through the field to ease home in 2nd place (1:45.68). KYLE looks in good shape following his recent PB (1:44.61), albeit he had a covid scare a few weeks ago.
DAY 7 – 21 JULY
ELLIE BAKER was drawn in Heat 3 of the 800m. ELLIE ran a very smart race, keeping in contention for the first 600m, coming into the finish strait she found a gasp on the inside and finished in 3rd place (2:01.72). Post-race ELLIE was very pleased with her race strategy.
KYLE LANGFORD was drawn in Semi-Final 1 of the 800m. The race set off at a reasonable pace, around 500m KYLE tried to move from the back of the field and was baulked. Which meant KYLE had lost his momentum, in the home straight he came through the field to finished in 4th place (1:45.91). 
DAY 8 – 22 JULY
ELLIE BAKER was drawn in Semi-Final 2 of the 800m. ELLIE was up against a very strong field, and found the pace very fast, and in the home straight was treading water to finish in 8th place (2:02.77).
ZHARNEL HUGHES ran on Leg 2 for GB in the Heat 2 of the 4x100m Relay, they ran a solid race to finish in 2nd place behind the USA (38.49).
DAY 9 – 23 JULY
ZHARNEL HUGHES ran on his customary Leg 2 for GB in the Final of the 4x100m Relay, they ran probable one of their best race, with the handovers very solid. The race was won by Canada (37.48), USA 2nd (37.55) and the GB team took the bronze medal (37.83).

JACK BUCKNER LAYS OUT HIS BATTLE PLAN – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

UKA’s new chief executive says rebuilding trust in the sport, resurrecting the governing body’s finances and getting athletics back into London are among his priorities for the ‘sleeping giant’ of British sport. In 1985 JACK BUCKNER ran (13:21.06) to finish a close third behind SYDNEY MAREE and DOUG PADILLA in the 5000m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene. At this month’s World Championships at the same Hayward Field venue his time would have been good enough to qualify for the 5000m final. He has long since hung up his racing spikes, though. Instead, he has visited TrackTown USA in recent days as the new chief executive of UK Athletics. Speaking to the media on the eighth day of the championships and having only officially been in the role for four days after leaving a similar CEO post at British Swimming, BUCKNER has yet to get to grips with the complexities of athletics in 2022. But it’s clear he already has a number of strong opinions about the direction he wants to take domestic athletics. Among his priorities are getting the governing body’s finances back on track, rebuilding trust in the sport, getting televised top-level athletics back into London and on to the BBC regularly. “The potential is absolutely massive,” he says. “It’s the only sport where you can walk out your door and to a track down the road and become an Olympic champion. No other sport has that level of accessibility, inclusivity, diversity – in a genuine way.”

BUCKNER, who won European 5000m gold in 1986 and world bronze in 1987, adds: “It’s not just a sleeping giant but it’s massively undervalued, too. I don’t think the sport has been very good at telling its story.” The 60-year-old says looking at finances that have been hit during the Covid pandemic are one of his first big areas to try to sort out. But he splits his focus into three broad sections. Firstly there is “governance” and the role of UKA. Secondly is “the sport bit” and what he calls the quest to develop and “a dynamic performance programme” and a “winning well” philosophy. Thirdly there is the commercial development and marketing of the sport and he has already got off to a flying start here by signing an agency called Two Circles which is run by former 800m runner Gareth Balch to help with marketing and selling tickets. “I think it’s the most exciting Olympic and Paralympic sport and it’s brilliant to be back in it,” says BUCKNER, who has also worked at British Triathlon in the past. “There’s a lot to do in the performance area, rebuilding the reputation of the sport – I want people to look at UKA as a really reputable organisation – and there’s a lot of work to do in the commercial and marketing area.”

BUCKNER is speaking a couple of days after JAKE WIGHTMAN’S brilliant victory in the 1500m in Eugene. The performance, BUCKNER says, is one of those “big moments that cuts through everything else and in a way that not many other sports can do and suddenly everyone is talking about it. Even BORIS JOHNSON was talking about it,” he adds. The sport will be in the news when moments like this take place during major championships, and the Commonwealth Games and European Championships could provide further moments but what happens when we hit the autumn? BUCKNER says it’s difficult to “hit the pause” button at the moment but once the summer season is over he will get his teeth into meeting key organisations in the sport. Much of his work will be about rebuilding trust, too. “Historically [there’s been] a big breakdown in trust,” he says. “I’m really keen to rebuild trust between athletes, coaches, the governing body, agents and brands.”

On the topic of top level athletics at major stadia in the UK, he confirms that athletics will “definitely” be staged at the London Stadium, with next year’s Diamond League meeting confirmed for the Stratford venue. Why is London important? “Apart from being the biggest centre of population it has the clubs, athletes, history, heritage,” he says. “It’s important domestically for the sport and I think it’s important conceptually because if you go anywhere in international sport then everyone wants to come to London. These global cities have a disproportionate impact. That said Birmingham will be brilliant, too, and of course we have the European [Championships] bid there.” Naturally, BUCKNER has been drawing comparisons between swimming and athletics too. Amusingly, he admits: “When I went into swimming I thought would be like athletics but it’s not. They have a much more instinctive sense of team work than athletes do. They turn up on time, do exactly what they’re told and they sit in the stands at an event and support their team-mates. Athletics as a sport right the way through is not like that. It is the most individual sport that there is.”

He believes the elite athlete support system in the UK is perhaps not as good as it should be. “World-class athletes will seek out world-class environments,” he explains. “And if we don’t provide it then they will go elsewhere to find it and I’m not convinced, from what I’ve seen, that we’re providing the level of service that some of them need to improve.” On the timescale to iron out these issues, he says he hasn’t really given that much thought yet, but says: “I’ve found you don’t have to tell athletes something twice. Already I can feel the momentum changing. Part of me is thinking it could happen quite quickly.” Certainly there is lots of room for improvement. UK Athletics has seen a number of short-lived CEOs and chairs arrive and leave in recent years with Jo Coates’ tenure as chief executive during the pandemic lasting less than two years.

“Athletics is seen as a problem child,” says BUCKNER. “Right now if you go into UK Sport, the BOA or Sport England and mention the word ‘athletics’ everybody’s eyes roll. So there’s a really big piece of work that needs to be done to re-engage and reposition the sport in the right way.” He adds: “I firmly believe this is a sleeping giant. It’s a fabulous sport and could be really good but I don’t want to make knee jerk decision based simply on where we are currently. We need to do things step by step and we have so much potential.” Currently enjoying a honeymoon period with the media, Buckner BUCKNER has everyone’s support. The clock is ticking, though, with a short-term measure of success being the medals count at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

REPECHAGE ROUND TO REPLACE FASTEST QUALIFIERS AT PARIS 2024 – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

World Athletics announce that an extra repechage round will replace fastest qualifiers at the Paris 2024 Olympics. An extra repechage round will replace those who gain qualification as fastest losers for individual track events from 200m to 1500m in distance, including the hurdles events, at the Paris 2024 Olympics. It means that athletes who do not qualify automatically in the heats will have a second chance to qualify for the semi-finals by participating in a repechage round. The format for Paris 2024 will therefore be: round one, repechage round, semi-finals and the final. However, it has been pointed out that those athletes that get through the repechage will have less time to prepare for the subsequent rounds, against athletes that automatically qualified.

“After consulting with our athletes and broadcasters, we believe this is an innovation which will make progression in these events more straightforward for athletes and will build anticipation for fans and broadcasters,” said World Athletics President SEBASTIAN COE. “The repechage rounds will give more exposure to our sport during the peak Olympic period and will be carefully scheduled to ensure that every event on our Olympic programme retains its share of the spotlight.” The reaction to the decision though has been rather negative. “Not allowing fastest losers, forcing them to race amongst themselves again, said DAI GREENE, 2011 world and 2010 Commonwealth 400m hurdles champion. “How is an extra race going to help them be competitive in the semi final? They’ll still get the worst lanes and have an extra round in their legs.”

“This ‘repechage’ will put some athletes at a disadvantage by having to run an extra race, added MARK ENGLISH, double Olympian and 2014 European 800m bronze medallist. “Alt solution? Just advance top 4 (which also promotes racing).” “This creates way more problems than it solves,” said Gabriela DEBUES-STAFFORD, double Olympian and Canadian national record holder over distances between 1500m and 5000m. “If we want to get away from little qs, this doesn’t solve the issue in the events where time qs are the most unpredictable, the steeple and 5k. I’d love to see what athletes think this approach is a good idea.”

The ball is now in World Athletics’ court to see if this decision will stand. Based on the response from both ex and current athletes, it may be likely the new format is scrapped or amended.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS
DAY 1 – 15 JULY
ZHARNEL HUGHES was drawn in Heat 2 of the 100m, in which ZHARNEL was up against the eventual Gold medallist FRED KERLEY of the USA. ZHARNEL had a reasonably good start, and was behind KERLEY all the way, and finished 2nd (9.97 w0.1) which was a seasons best legal time.
SCOTT LINCOLN was drawn in qualification Group A of the Shot put. There were 15 athletes in this group, and after his 3 attempts SCOTT could not quite match his recent performance, and finished in 8th place with (19.97m).
DAY 2 – 16 JULY
LIZZIE BIRD was drawn in Heat 1 of the 3000m Steeplechase. The race was run at a reasonably fast pace, and around the halfway mark LIZZIE was some 3 seconds behind the leaders. The pace never let up and LIZZIE finished in 6th place (9:23.17). The winning time of (9:01.54) was the quickest of the 3 heats by some 12 seconds.
DAY 3 – 17 JULY
NICK PERCY was drawn in qualification Group B of the Discus. There were 15 athletes in this group, and after his 3 attempts NICK finished in 5th place with (63.20m). NICK finished in 14th place overall, a tantalising 95cm of qualifying for the final.
DAY 4 – 18 JULY
JADE LALLY was drawn in qualification Group A of the Discus. There were 15 athletes in this group, and after her 3 attempts JADE finished in 8th place with (58.21m). JADE finished in 18th place overall, just over 3m from qualifying for the final.
DAY 5 – 19 JULY
LINA NIELSEN was drawn in Heat 4 of the 400m Hurdles. The race was run at a reasonably pace, but as LINA entered the home straight she started going backwards, and finished 8th (57.42). In her post race interview she pointed out that she has had some recent problems.
DAY 6 – 20 JULY
KYLE LANGFORD was drawn in Heat 2 of the 800m. KYLE ran an excellent race, being in 7th place at the bell, he then moved through the field to ease home in 2nd place (1:45.68). KYLE looks in good shape following his recent PB (1:44.61), albeit he had a covid scare a few weeks ago.

ENGLAND U20 AND U23 CHAMPIONSHIPS – Takes place last weekend at Bedford.
It turned out to an excellent championships for the club, with no less than 5 english champions.

EVE WRIGHT – Under 23 Womens 100m. EVE ran an excellent race, winning in a time of (11.56 w1.4) and is ranked UK No.3. Since her early years, EVE has been there or there about in the various championships, this is her first major win and is the start of good things to come.
MARLI JESSOP – Under 20 Womens 100m Hurdles. Since last years personal best (13.80 w1.4), MARLI has raised the bar to an astonishing level, lowering her legal personal best to (13.38 w1.8), ranked UK No.1 and UK No.10 on the all-time list. Also the time is a qualifying time for the World U20 Championships. MARLI won the final by .29 of a second (13.58 w1.1) from LILY PARRIS (13.87).
EMILY NEWNHAM – Under 20 Womens 400m Hurdles. Another of our athletes who has had an outstanding year, with a personal best (59.03) in the UK Senior Championships, also winning the Southern and English Schools and is currently ranked UK No.2. In Saturday’s final EMILY produced another sub 60 second run (59.47) winning by 2.73 seconds.
BRAD DAVIES-PUGHE – Under 20 Mens Long Jump. BRAD is currently at college in the USA, at Cloud County, Kansas.  In the competition BRAD put together a series of good jumps, and his winning jump was (7.35m w-1.0). His seasons best is (7.53m) just 3cm behind his personal best, and is ranked UK No.2 this year.
JESSICA-CHARLIE BENNETT – Under 20 Womens Hammer. JESSICA is 2nd claim from Southampton, JESSICA has had a very busy season, with 9 wins from her 17 competitions, the remainder either 2nd or 3rd. In the competion she had a winning throw of (53.39m) winning by almost 3.5m, and currently is ranked UK No.2 this year.

There were silver medals from ALANNAH FASHANU U23 (100m), GLEN QUAYLE U23 (Pole Vault) and OLIVER GRAHAM U23 (Hammer)
There were bronze medals from SAM WIGGINS U23 (800m), MANON BAINES U20 (Pole Vault) and JOSH WOODS U23 (Long Jump)

ENGLISH SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP – At the recent championships, the result for ABIGAIL EDWARDS in the U15G Pole Vault was incorrect, she finished 4th Equal with (2.70m)

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED FOR ‘THE BIG HALF’ – RAY POWELL has told me that ‘The Big Half’ is back in town on Sunday 4 September.  We are doing the same job as last year, the Lucozade station at Mile 8. Start time 7.15am finishing around 1.00 to 1.30pm, after we cleared the tables and stock back onto the lorry. Venue Jamaica road, come out of Bermondsey station, turn left and then its 300 yards. Lunch, Kit and Lucozade supplied. RAY is looking for 30 volunteers, so please contact him as soon as possible. RAY wishes you all an enjoyable summer.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED FOR ‘THE BIG HALF’ – RAY POWELL has told me that ‘The Big Half’ is back in town on Sunday 4 September.  We are doing the same job as last year, the Lucozade station at Mile 8. Start time 7.15am finishing around 1.00 to 1.30pm, after we cleared the tables and stock back onto the lorry. Venue Jamaica road, come out of Bermondsey station, turn left and then its 300 yards. NEW OFFICIAL ANDY HOWELL – We are very pleased to congratulate ANDY (father of U15B NATHAN) on his recent accreditation as a Level 1 Track Judge.

ANDY was one of the parents who joined this year’s initiative of giving formal instruction for officiating during training evenings at StoneX.    We organised an experienced official to provide the Assistant Track and Field Officials course over two evenings in April at the stadium. We had realised that parents are generally keen to help out at matches, but that a degree of instruction and organisation is required, especially when athletics has to be fitted in with family life. On the other hand it is becoming increasingly difficult to organise matches unless help with the officiating can be found.

This year’s initiative can best be described as a learning experience – not least because we believe that the present UKA arrangements for training officials need to be reviewed to take account of the practicalities of present day life. It has also been difficult dealing with the bureaucracy of getting accreditation. Both of these matters are presently under discussion between ourselves and England Athletics. We are aiming to be able to instruct parents with our own officials at any time at StoneX, and to give them a better knowledge than in the present courses. So we are very appreciative of the other parents who attended these courses and who have been helping out at matches during the season.  We are going to progress their accreditation during the remainder of the season.

ANDY had cleared some of the bureaucratic hurdles before April and was well set up to progress to the Level 1 Track Judge course (on-line) during May. He is one of three of us who did courses, but he is the first to complete the requisite experience for accreditation. Beyond that we are extremely grateful to Track Referees DANIEL SEECHAN and STUART PUGH for mentoring ANDY at the matches he attended. It was soon apparent that the real education took place at the actual matches. They also advised us that ANDY was quite ready to apply for accreditation when he had completed the minimum number of matches – he was that good a learner. We also appreciated that a lot more is needed to become a proficient Track Referee, but we are on our way.

Although it will probably not be possible to do more formal training this year, if anyone else thinks that they would like to help, then please contact davidnbradley@btopenworld.com and I will keep you informed about the situation. So, congratulations again, and we look forward to further success for the HOWELL family, on and beside the track.

LEE MCCONNELL RECEIVES HER REALLOCATED BRONZE MEDAL – LEE has received her reallocated bronze medal for the 4x400m at the World Indoor Championships in 2010.
LEE was presented with the medal at the Muller UK Championships in Manchester alongside teammates VICKI BARR and KIM WALL. The fourth member of the team was PERRI SHAKES-DRAYTON, (not in attendance on Sunday). The medals are reallocated after one of the Jamaican team, (original third-place finishers), failed a drugs test. ‘It is a bittersweet moment to be honest but it is great to finally get recognition,’ said LEE. ‘At the time even if you have suspicions you put them to one side and just do your best and assume that is that. I don’t actually remember much from the day. I’ll have to go back home and watch it on YouTube!’ It’s the fourth time over the years now that LEE has received a reallocated medal. After retiring in 2014, the Glaswegian had previously had 4x400m medals upgraded to bronze for the 2009 and 2011 world championships – and to silver for the 2010 European championships. 

LEE joined Shaftesbury in 1978 as an Under 15, and started her athletics career as a high jumper with a PB of (1.88m) in 2000. LEE competed in the European U23 Championships in 1999 in Gothenburg, Sweden, qualifying with (1.86m) and finished 12th in the Final with (1.82m). In 2000 LEE switched to the 400mm where she made rapid progression. In 2002, LEE won individual medals at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships over 400m, and was fourth in the World Cup, setting a lifetime best of (50.82). The following season she enhanced her reputation as being a championship performer by reaching the final at the World Championships in Paris, placing seventh.
After reaching the semi-finals at the 2004 Olympic Games, she decided to switch to the 400m hurdles but despite having the potential to be a world-class exponent at that discipline, the switch did not fully materialise but he did win a Commonwealth bronze medal, setting a lifetime best of (55.25). LEE still remained an invaluable member of the British 4x400m, greatly contributing to successive bronze medal winning performances at the World Championships but she was not fit for the Olympic Games 4x400m relay in Beijing, having to withdraw through injury.
2009 started off well for her, but injury curtailed her performances and although a member of the 4x400m relay squad at the World Championships it was not until her last race of the season in the Shanghai Grand Prix that she managed to run somewhere near her potential with a season’s best of (51.45). 2010 started brightly with a convincing win in the European Championships Trials at Birmingham, but a below-par run in the championships in Barcelona where she finished in fourth place in her heat and was also just outside of the medals at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The Museum of World Athletics (MOWA) gears up for the World Championships by remembering some of the great performances from the past. Oregon will become the centre of the athletics world this week with the arrival of the 18th edition of the World Athletics Championships. There will be top-class action at every turn but it won’t just be what’s happening in and around Hayward Field that will be worth seeing.  World Athletics’ Heritage are already there in force, too, staging two exhibitions full of artefacts which will fascinate the track and field fans who are expected to arrive from all over the globe.  The MOWA Track and Field Heritage Exhibitions are to be found both in the state capital of Portland and, of course, in the championships host city of Eugene ­– at the EMU building on the University of Oregon campus, less than a 400m walk away from Hayward Field. Visitors will be able to get up close to pieces of athletics history which have been at the heart of some of the great sporting moments seen through the years.  Here is a sample of what can be found at the Eugene exhibition but, if you can’t be there in person, you can view and learn more about these amazing items by visiting the immersive 3D interactive experience of MOWA online.  

USAIN BOLT Singlet and competition number, 2011 – In any exhibition charting the history of athletics, it would be remiss not to have an artefact from USAIN BOLT and the Jamaican sprinting superstar has generously donated a singlet and number from the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, where he won the 200m and helped set a world record in the 4x100m.
The two items shown here are especially important as they are mementos of BOLT returning to his usual stunning form after his shock disqualification for a false start in the 100m final. In the longer sprint, perhaps mindful of his 100m disaster earlier in the championships, he started cautiously but was soon into his running and well in the lead halfway into the race before winning in (19.40).
He was to win again over 200m at the next two World Championships – in Moscow and Beijing. On a historical note, this was only the second World Championships with names on bibs, rather than numbers, the practice having been introduced two years earlier in Berlin. 

HAILE GEBRSELASSIE, 10,000m singlet & bibs, 1999
The 10,000m in Seville saw the Ethiopian great win his fourth consecutive world championships gold medal over 25 laps of the track and this singlet and number will be familiar to anyone who has ever watched the race.
GEBRSELASSIE took the lead on the penultimate lap with a long surge for home in the searing Andalusian heat, uncorking a (54.37) last lap and running away from his rivals before crossing the line in (27:57.27). The time was irrelevant in the conditions but the moment eternally memorable.
The race led to him being talked about in the same breath as PAAVO NURMI and EMIL ZATOPEK when consideration was given to who was the world’s greatest distance runner. The following year, in Sydney, GEBRSELASSIE went on to retain the Olympic 10,000m title he had won in 1996. 

MARIE-JOSE PEREC, 400m singlet, 1995 – MARIE-JOSE PEREC regained the 400m world title she had won four years earlier in Tokyo in this apparel, her country’s only gold medal in Gothenburg.
The Frenchwoman ran relatively conservatively through the first half of the race but took the lead coming into the home straight and was never headed, crossing the line in (49.28) for the fastest time in the world over one lap of the track in three years.
In addition to her two world titles, PEREC also won three Olympic gold medals, the 400m at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games and then both the 200m and 400m at the following Games in Atlanta four years later.

ANITA WLODARCZYK’S hammer, 2015 – After being injured while apprehending a thief who was trying to steal her car, ANITA WLODARCZYK sadly won’t be in action in Eugene – but this hammer serves as a reminder of the Pole’s throwing prowess.
This was the implement which helped her retain her world title in Beijing, having won not only in Moscow but also six years earlier in Berlin, but it has another special place in athletics history.
Wlodarczyk was using this hammer in the northern Polish town of Cetniewo four weeks before the World Championships when she set a world record of (81.08m), the first time that any woman had thrown the 4kg implement further than the 80-metre line in competition.
She also threw beyond 80 metres in Beijing, reaching a championship record of (80.85m), and subsequently set further world records in 2016 as well as winning the 2016 Olympic title in Rio and then adding a fourth world title in London the following year. She won her third Olympic title at Tokyo 2020.

ALLYSON FELIX’S 200m spikes – Oregon22 will be the final major international championships of ALLYSON FELIX’S remarkably lengthy and illustrious career.
The legendary sprinter was still a teenager and three months away from her 20th birthday when she first tasted World Championships competition, back in 2005, but she immediately looked to the manor born.
There was no sign of nerves or inexperience as these spikes helped propel her to 200m gold in (21.81), in Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium.
She came off the bend level with Jamaica’s VERONICA CAMPBELL but then flew down the home straight to finish almost five metres clear of her rival for a winning margin that had not been seen at a global championships since 1948.
The lightweight sprint spikes FELIX wore were among the early examples of a shoe manufacturer producing a pair with different colours on each foot, a trend which is still popular. To date, the American has won 13 world titles and seven Olympic gold medals in the 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m.

WILLIE BANKS world record-breaking triple jump singlet and number – Athletics fans in Britain will associate the triple jump with current world record-holder JONATHAN EDWARDS, but before him it was WILLIE BANKS who broke new ground in the event.
The American was one of the most exuberant performers on the international circuit during the 1980s and a popular competitor around the world.
This singlet was worn when he set a world triple jump record of (17.97m) at the 1985 US national championships in Indianapolis, adding eight centimetres to the previous record set in 1975 by Brazil’s JOAO CARLOS DE OLIVIERA.
It would be more than 10 years before EDWARDS improved this mark.
He might have been a record-breaker but BANKS record at major international championships perhaps did not quite match the level of his talent. He did, however, win the triple jump silver medal at the inaugural 1983 IAAF World Championships and was also victorious at the 1985 World Cup. Since 2019, BANKS has been an elected member of the World Athletics Council.  

MIKE POWELL’S long jump world record singlet and numbers – In Tokyo, what many consider to be the greatest field event contest in athletics history unfolded at the 1991 World Championships, as two Americans went toe to toe in an epic long jump battle.
Having seen his rival and compatriot CARL LEWIS produce wind-assisted leaps of (8.83m) and (8.91m) in the third and fourth round, the pressure was firmly on MIKE POWELL.
However, he unleashed a jump close to nine metres and, after an agonising pause, a legal wind reading was confirmed. The figures of (8.95m) flashed up on the scoreboard. BOB BEAMON’S world record of (8.90m) from the 1968 Olympic Games had finally been broken.
In response, LEWIS produced legal efforts of (8.87m) and (8.84m) with his last two jumps – the best of an illustrious career which included four Olympic long jump gold medals, but for once he had to settle for second best. POWELL’S Tokyo leap remains the current world record.
By the 1990s, the design of the USA singlets had changed considerably from those worn by POWELL, LEWIS and their team-mates in the 1980s, an example of which is shown here. In Tokyo, a predominantly white singlet was issued to POWELL and his fellow Americans.
POWELL was to return two years later at the next world championships in Stuttgart, Germany, and retain his long jump title.

There will be 59 medal events including a fully integrated Para Sport programme. TRIATHLON and PARA TRIATHLON take place at Sutton Park 29 and 31 July. The Individual races contest a 750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run, and the Team races contest a 250m swim, 7km cycle, 1.5km run.
