WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – Congratulations to MARLI JESSOP (100m Hurdles) and EMMANUEL DURUIHEOMA (4 x 100m Relay) who have been selected to compete in Cali, Columbia from the 2 to 7 August.
Well done the parents and the coaches. Good luck and have a great time. This is the experience of a lifetime.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – Finished this Sunday 24 July at Haywards Field, Eugene, Oregon, USA. It is being televised live on either BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, BBC iPlayer or BBC red button, with their afternoon session being televised in the early hours of the morning UK time.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS
DAY 1 – 15 JULY
ZHARNEL HUGHES was drawn in Heat 2 of the 100m, in which ZHARNEL was up against the eventual Gold medallist FRED KERLEY of the USA. ZHARNEL had a reasonably good start, and was behind KERLEY all the way, and finished 2nd (9.97 w0.1) which was a seasons best legal time.
SCOTT LINCOLN was drawn in qualification Group A of the Shot put. There were 15 athletes in this group, and after his 3 attempts SCOTT could not quite match his recent performance, and finished in 8th place with (19.97m).
DAY 2 – 16 JULY
LIZZIE BIRD was drawn in Heat 1 of the 3000m Steeplechase. The race was run at a reasonably fast pace, and around the halfway mark LIZZIE was some 3 seconds behind the leaders. The pace never let up and LIZZIE finished in 6th place (9:23.17). The winning time of (9:01.54) was the quickest of the 3 heats by some 12 seconds.
DAY 3 – 17 JULY
NICK PERCY was drawn in qualification Group B of the Discus. There were 15 athletes in this group, and after his 3 attempts NICK finished in 5th place with (63.20m). NICK finished in 14th place overall, a tantalising 95cm of qualifying for the final.
DAY 4 – 18 JULY
JADE LALLY was drawn in qualification Group A of the Discus. There were 15 athletes in this group, and after her 3 attempts JADE finished in 8th place with (58.21m). JADE finished in 18th place overall, just over 3m from qualifying for the final.
DAY 5 – 19 JULY
LINA NIELSEN was drawn in Heat 4 of the 400m Hurdles. The race was run at a reasonably pace, but as LINA entered the home straight she started going backwards, and finished 8th (57.42). In her post race interview she pointed out that she has had some recent problems.
DAY 6 – 20 JULY
KYLE LANGFORD was drawn in Heat 2 of the 800m. KYLE ran an excellent race, being in 7th place at the bell, he then moved through the field to ease home in 2nd place (1:45.68). KYLE looks in good shape following his recent PB (1:44.61), albeit he had a covid scare a few weeks ago.

ENGLAND U20 AND U23 CHAMPIONSHIPS – Takes place last weekend at Bedford.
It turned out to an excellent championships for the club, with no less than 5 english champions.

EVE WRIGHT – Under 23 Womens 100m. EVE ran an excellent race, winning in a time of (11.56 w1.4) and is ranked UK No.3. Since her early years, EVE has been there or there about in the various championships, this is her first major win and is the start of good things to come.
MARLI JESSOP – Under 20 Womens 100m Hurdles. Since last years personal best (13.80 w1.4), MARLI has raised the bar to an astonishing level, lowering her legal personal best to (13.38 w1.8), ranked UK No.1 and UK No.10 on the all-time list. Also the time is a qualifying time for the World U20 Championships. MARLI won the final by .29 of a second (13.58 w1.1) from LILY PARRIS (13.87).
EMILY NEWNHAM – Under 20 Womens 400m Hurdles. Another of our athletes who has had an outstanding year, with a personal best (59.03) in the UK Senior Championships, also winning the Southern and English Schools and is currently ranked UK No.2. In Saturday’s final EMILY produced another sub 60 second run (59.47) winning by 2.73 seconds.
BRAD DAVIES-PUGHE – Under 20 Mens Long Jump. BRAD is currently at college in the USA, at Cloud County, Kansas.  In the competition BRAD put together a series of good jumps, and his winning jump was (7.35m w-1.0). His seasons best is (7.53m) just 3cm behind his personal best, and is ranked UK No.2 this year.
JESSICA-CHARLIE BENNETT – Under 20 Womens Hammer. JESSICA is 2nd claim from Southampton, JESSICA has had a very busy season, with 9 wins from her 17 competitions, the remainder either 2nd or 3rd. In the competion she had a winning throw of (53.39m) winning by almost 3.5m, and currently is ranked UK No.2 this year.

There were silver medals from ALANNAH FASHANU U23 (100m), GLEN QUAYLE U23 (Pole Vault) and OLIVER GRAHAM U23 (Hammer)
There were bronze medals from SAM WIGGINS U23 (800m), MANON BAINES U20 (Pole Vault) and JOSH WOODS U23 (Long Jump)

LONDON INTER CLUB CHALLENGE/LUCA ATHLETICS SERIES The third of four fixtures takes place this Saturday 23 July at the StoneX Stadium.

ENGLISH SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPAt the recent championships, the result for ABIGAIL EDWARDS in the U15G Pole Vault was incorrect, she finished 4th Equal with (2.70m)

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED FOR ‘THE BIG HALF’ RAY POWELL has told me that ‘The Big Half’ is back in town on Sunday 4 September.  We are doing the same job as last year, the Lucozade station at Mile 8. Start time 7.15am finishing around 1.00 to 1.30pm, after we cleared the tables and stock back onto the lorry. Venue Jamaica road, come out of Bermondsey station, turn left and then its 300 yards. Lunch, Kit and Lucozade supplied. RAY is looking for 30 volunteers, so please contact him as soon as possible. RAY wishes you all an enjoyable summer.

BIRMINGHAM 2022 COMMONWEALTH GAMES – ATHLETICS take place at the new Alexander Stadium 2-7 August, with the Marathons on 30 July. There will be 59 medal events including a fully integrated Para Sport programme. TRIATHLON and PARA TRIATHLON take place at Sutton Park 29 and 31 July. The Individual races contest a 750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run, and the Team races contest a 250m swim, 7km cycle, 1.5km run. CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

SBH MIDWEEK JUMPS CLUB AT STONEX STADIUM – The current arrangements until further notice are that Pole Vault training is on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 18.30pm to 21.00pm. High Jump training is on Wednesday’s from 18.45pm to 21.00pm.
