OLYMPIC GAMES 2024 – This year, one of the biggest sporting events takes place. The Olympic Games in Paris, which commences from the 26 July until the 11 August.

The 33rd Olympics has 19 days of competition (handball, football and rugby take place from 24 July)
There will be 329 events, 206 National Olympic Committees, 28 sports including 4 additional sports (Breaking, Sport Climbing, Skateboarding and Surfing), 758 sessions and 10 500 athletes
The Athletics take place from the 1 August until the 11 August.

Contested in the first ancient Olympic Games, athletics is the oldest sport on record, with the names of champions documented from as far back as 776 BC. The ancient Olympic Games included events such as running races and a pentathlon event that consisted of a running race, long jump, discus throw, javelin throw and wrestling. The first meets in modern times that can be likened to the athletics competitions we know today took place in 1840 in Shropshire, England. Other such championships began to thrive and spread in the 1880s, initially in England, the USA and Europe in particular. In 1912, the international federation that oversees international athletics competitions, the IAAF (now known as World Athletics) was set up.

SEB COE: EVERYONE WANTS TO PROGRESS AS LONG AS IT DOESN’T INVOLVE CHANGES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of SEB COE taken at the 1984 Olympic Games, by MARK SHEARMAN.

After a memorable year and a brilliant World Champs in Budapest, the World Athletics president outlines his vision for his final period at the global governing body and warns it could be a rocky ride. SEB COE was always at his most dangerous on the last lap. Few of his rivals on the track could match his famed finishing kick. Sometimes this would even involve multiple injections of pace in the closing stages. Now aged 67 he is entering the home straight as president of World Athletics. Following eight years in the global governing body’s hot-seat, he is into his final four-year term and gearing up for another monumental sprint to the line. So what are his priorities? “I want people to look back on 2024 and 2025 in the same way they look back on 2016, which was a root and branch review of the sport,” he says. “And that we did things that made a significant difference… and that the sport looked different and will never look the same again.

“This doesn’t mean jettisoning 150 years of history and heritage but it is saying that too much of what we do is through rote and because ‘we’ve always done it’ – and it isn’t good enough. We have to do things differently and make sure the things we want to preserve and cherish are done in a way that they can be preserved and cherished in front of new audiences.” At the end of a memorable year which featured what COE believes was the greatest World Championships in history in the shape of Budapest 2023, he adds: “I want to see more young people watching our sport and greater spectator activation. I want to improve the product on television, as I don’t think it’s that good in many places. “Broadcast still do the same thing over and over – and haven’t changed very much over the past 20-30 years – and I’m not sure the quality of discussion about the coverage of our sport is as high there as it is in, say, football, cricket or rugby. Those are the kind of things I want to try to influence.”

He continues: “When it comes to things I have a direct control over, it’s the innovation itself inside the sport and there are many things that we are looking at with everything currently on the table.” But he warns: “It won’t make everybody happy.” He adds with a smile: “If I wanted to win a popularity contest, I would never have done what I did in 2015. I know that I’m an acquired taste in some quarters.” COE has an innovation team at World Athletics which is charged at looking at new ideas where “nothing is off the table”. He says: “I’m absolutely focused on what the product (of athletics) looks like. How we can use it to grow the sport. How we can bring more people, more technical officials, more coaches and volunteers into it and, critically, how we can future-proof the sport. The Netflix documentary next year will help do that – and there are other things being worked upon.” COE says his first four years as president were focused on “stopping the ship sinking” and his second four years were spent on areas such as improving the competition calendar and getting on top of the transfers of allegiance issues, most of which he concedes should have been done earlier. But as we head into Olympic year, he says: “We’ve got the foundations in place and the red carpet laid out in front of us to do what might be the toughest part of the journey. “Everyone is in favour of progress as long as it doesn’t involve change!” He is armed with facts from multiple surveys and studies, too. “We need to make sure the changes we make are data-based. The work we did during Budapest gives us a useful indicator of what’s working and what people are not too interested in. “That doesn’t mean it gives us carte blanche to do away with some things. It just tells us where the challenges lie.” COE uses the example of horizontal jumps. “We’ve found 31% of jumps ended in failure with no-jumps. In an hour’s coverage you have an awful lot of sandpit raking and cones on runways. “In an hour’s field events coverage there is too much downtime and watching people getting changed and ready to do something. So I think there are things we can do to improve the quality of the event, ranging from people in the stadium to those watching on television.” COE was speaking to specialist athletics writers during an end-of-year video interview and other topics that came up were as follows…

World Athletics AOY controversy On the global governing body’s last-minute decision to split its annual awards into track, field and out-of-stadia awards, COE says: “I don’t want to be dismissive about it and I’m sure it has its magnesium flare at the moment but it’s not the No.1 priority for me right now. I also don’t accept that nobody knew about it.” He adds: “The athlete reps were informed because many were in Monaco on that weekend.” However, award winners such as NOAH LYLES, who expressed surprise and bemusement at the time, were not told as it would have spoiled the surprise of winning. COE added that, similar to any other area at World Athletics, the whole process would be reviewed.

World Cross 2026 in January The World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee in two years’ time being held on January 10 has raised eyebrows and COE admits “it is not ideal”. The decision, he adds, was due to “local conditions and temperatures” among other things. On the championships’ place in the calendar more generally, he adds: “We have looked at rescheduling the world cross-country to be held before Christmas.” COE says World Athletics has been in discussion with European Athletics to “create a critical mass of cross country ahead of clearing the way (in the new year) for the indoor season.”

Declining print media coverage “When I travelled to meetings 30-40 years ago, every newspaper sent specialist athletics writers,” COE recalls. “So the issues now are probably due to the budgets that newspapers have got available. It’s not just sport that is affected either.” He adds: “What can World Athletics do? We have outreach programmes through news agencies to encourage young writers to focus on track and field. Also, I’ve spoken to around 100 specialist athletics writers today across 30 countries so it’s tougher than it’s been but you’re not defunct yet!”

Great anniversaries in 2024 May 6 sees the 70th anniversary of the first sub-four-minute mile with the summer marking the 40th anniversary of the Los Angeles Olympics, where COE won 1500m gold and 800m silver. “They’re huge moments,” says COE. “The sub-four minute mile was Herculean and will be recognised. It was a huge breakthrough. More people have individually climbed Everest than have run a four-minute mile so it’s still physiologically quite a serious achievement. Not that many people have done it.” On the 1984 Olympics, he adds: “LA was special for me because I’d gone from the command control of the first Communist games through to the comedic opulence of LA resplendent with 84 grand pianos and 84 Liberace lookalikes and a rocket man who could have burned a hole in the finishing straight. It was a very special games and I remember it with great affection and it’s one where DALEY THOMPSON, who roomed with me, and I had probably the best month of our lives.” COE will hope 2024 produces the same kind of moments and memories for future generations.

WORLD MARATHON MAJORS MOVE STEP CLOSE TO HOLDING GLOBAL TITLES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of CHARLOTTE PURDUE at the 2019 World Championships in Doha taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

SEB COE is critical of governments for lack of action when it comes to tackling climate change. SEB COE says plans to incorporate world championships marathon races into the World Marathon Majors events are gathering pace. The president of World Athletics struggles to see an end to the global warming crisis any time soon and is keen to put measures in place that will provide the best outcome for athletes and fans. COE recently gave his annual “president’s award” to the Abbott World Marathon Majors series and he told the media on Monday (Dec 18) that he has been in discussions with them about weaving the world championship road races into their big-city event programmes. “In light of global warming and inability of governments to use anything other than ‘BS’ in this space,” he says, “then it’s going to be down to sport to try to figure out how they navigate their way through this.”

He added: “We’ve found 76% of our athletes already said that global warming has had a profound impact on their competition and training programmes. “I think it’s inevitable that sport will globally have to look at rejigging the calendar because there won’t be any immediate respite from this problem and we’re further from the 2030 targets than we’ve ever been, whatever anyone tells us at COP 28!” The World Championships marathon in Doha in 2019 was particularly savage with the women’s marathon field facing temperatures of 32.7C and humidity levels of 73.3% as the race kicked off. CHARLOTTE PURDUE was one of many who failed to finish in the oppressive conditions.

COE explains further: “The issue for us is really about how we can create those opportunities. A lot of athletes are also looking at the world championships and thinking that Chicago or New York is around the corner and asking themselves whether they should be running the worlds when they can earn good money on the roads a few weeks later.  “Maybe we can reduce the marathon to a half-marathon at the world championships which would at least take some of the athlete welfare issues away and would allow them to do it in the build up to a marathon majors event.”

DISTANCE RUNNING ICON LESLIE WATSON DIES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of LESLIE taken during the 1979 London to Brighton relay by MARK SHEARMAN.

Prolific and pioneering racer in the 1970s and 1980s was a popular and striking figure who won dozens of marathons and set world bests in ultra-running. Distance running trailblazer, world record-holder and multiple magazine cover star, LESLIE WATSON will be fondly remembered as one of the most iconic athletes during the original jogging boom. The glamorous globe-trotting runner notched up more than 60 marathon victories around the world. These included the Women’s AAA title in 1981, plus world best performances at 50 miles and 100km. She died on New Year’s Day aged 78 after being hospitalised on December 23. “I imagine you will struggle to find a single person in the world who would have a bad word to say about her,” says Lawrence Brampton, one of her friends and former training partners.

Born as LESLIE MARY WATSON in Glasgow on February 4 in 1945, her father was a doctor and her mother a dancer who specialised in Russian Cossack dancing. Despite having modest ability as a runner, she was attracted to athletics and joined Maryhill Harriers, where she came into contact with a PE teacher called JOHN ANDERSON. Under ANDERSON’S coaching she won the Scottish Schools 880 yards title followed by the Scottish one mile crown, plus Scottish cross-country national titles in the late 1960s. Later, she put much of her success down to ANDERSON’S guidance. She qualified as a physiotherapist, moved to London and began to be drawn to the marathon, although this wasn’t a straightforward option for a female runner in the 1970s due to rules that forbade women from racing against men. “I’d much rather be a sprinter,” she later told AW, “but as I have no natural talent the marathon is my next favourite event.”

In 1975 she made her debut at 26.2 miles in the Masters and Maidens Marathon in Guildford. Her motivation? She thought running such a long way would help her lose weight off her already slim physique. “It crossed my mind that marathon running might be slimming,” she said. The race didn’t go well, though, as she clocked 3hr 31min “knowing that I had run a stupid race and knowing that I was unfit. But it was certainly slimming!” she added. She soon found her stride in the marathon, though. Whereas her absolute best remained a relatively modest (2:44:18) from the New York Marathon in 1982, she became a prolific racer at the distance, notching up an estimated 60-plus victories.

Racing for London Olympiades, WATSON proved a pioneering runner in not only the marathon but ultra-distance events. In 1979 she finished the first female in the London to Brighton race over 54 miles despite being an unofficial entrant due to women not being permitted. The organisers soon changed their rules to allow women to compete, though, with WATSON turning up in 1980 to successfully defend her title, this time receiving a trophy and proper recognition for the victory. At the peak of her career she ran a 50 miles world best of (6:02:37) in Connecticut, United States – breaking the old mark by two minutes – before returning to the UK to race 3000m on the track the following Saturday and the Women’s AAA Marathon in Rugby on Sunday, which she won in (2:49:08). For good measure she then won the Isle of Wight Marathon the next weekend in a 2:52:56 course record! In addition to appearing on the cover of AW (above), she was featured on the front pages of magazines like Runner’s World and Jogging magazine. In a sign of the times and with the distance running world dominated by men, newspaper articles often referred to her as the “glamour girl of marathons”.

Magazine covers aside, she featured in adverts for companies such as the London Runner, which led the shop being inundated with enquiries from runners who not only wanted to buy some shoes but also simply meet WATSON, who had links to the store due to her physiotherapy work. CHRIS BRASHER, the co-founder of the London Marathon, described WATSON in the Observer newspaper as “a beautiful woman with a magnificent shape which is famous throughout the world of long-distance running: famous because its beauty brings a smile to all men who run with her”. The website scottishdistancerunninghistory.scot, meanwhile, described her as “elegant, long striding, hair flowing and she always seemed to enjoy every step of her running”. The site added: “If (Scottish marathon pioneer) DALE GREIG broke through the glass ceiling keeping women out of marathon racing – remember that it was only in 1969 that women were allowed to race as far as 3000m on the track – then LESLIE shattered it so that it could never be put back together again.” In the twilight of her career, she won the Glasgow Marathon in (2:45:03), whereas in 1989 when at the age of 44 she won Adelaide, Australia, in (2:49:49). With more than 200 marathons under her belt, her final one was the Isle of Wight Marathon in 1994 which she won for the seventh time. She then retired from running but turned to powerlifting while maintaining her work as a physiotherapist.

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. Can you please let me know if you do NOT want your photograph to be published. Also, I would appreciate if you could send me any photographs, which I can then publish on the website and newsletter.

FACEBOOK – Photographs can be found on the SBH page.

CAN YOU HELP PLEASE I would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

LONDON VOLUNTEER AWARDS EVENING – Took place on Thursday 9 November.
Congratulations to STEVE MARSHALL, who was the recipient of the ‘Inspiring Official of the Year’.

This senior official officiates at a lot of the high level matches but also makes time for lower level track meetings such as County Championships and local leagues. Although a very experienced official with many major meetings under his belt, he now works a lot more with young athletes and with new officials. He has identified a number of people for progression and dedicated his time to sharing knowledge with them but not by telling them what to do but by coaching them through questioning and getting them to think about the answers themselves, which brilliant for developing long term understanding. He’s fantastic at mentoring officials and supporting their development – working with STEVE is always a learning experience. He explains things clearly, not just the what but also the why. One of his nominators says, “I have greatly valued STEVE MARSHALL’S guidance during my officiating journey and I know many others have too.” STEVE said: “New and experienced officials should never stop asking questions and always be prepared to learn.”

Note: STEVE was London Official of the Year in 2010, this nomination is to recognise that he is now working more often with newer officials and is taking the opportunity to help them develop.

THE CLUBS NEW SIGN  – Many thanks to ROBERTO RONCARATI for creating the design of the sign, then fitting it to the Clubs Office entry door in the West Stand at StoneX Stadium.

REBECCA JEGGO AND CHARLIE DOBSON – Both REBECCA and CHARLIE are Higher Competition Athletes with SBH, having joined the Club when they were Juniors. They have competed for us in both the YDL and the NAL. REBECCA completed her teacher training qualification in 2023 and then obtained a post graduate award in Secondary Education. She’s now a PE teacher at Ratcliffe College.

CHARLIE graduated from Loughborough University in 2023, and is now a full time athlete and is in the GB&NI squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics. In 2023, he was the 2nd ranked 400m runner in the UK with a time of (45.17) and the 2nd ranked 200m runner with a PB of (20.19), behind our own ZHARNEL HUGHES.  He was a member of the GB&NI 4 x 400m team that won the Gold Medal in the 2022 European Championships.

THE PASSING OF ALAN JOHNSON AND ROY STRATTON – It is with deep regret that we have heard of the passing of ALAN JOHNSON and ROY STRATTON recently.

ALAN gave a huge part of his life to athletics especially for his club, his county and all the leagues he ensured were kept running year in year out especially the Northern League. He was a friend of Northern Athletics and they will always be grateful for his support. GEOFF MORPHITIS recalled that ALAN was not only a key senior officer of the NAL, but also, the YDL. He will not be easily replaced, as all fixture and meeting issues went to him to resolve.

ROY was a lifelong member of his club Enfield & Haringey. ROY also had been at the centre of Middlesex athletics for more than 30 years, serving twice as their President. I knew ROY very well, and he always had a chat whenever we met. He was also an avid reader of the SBH Newsletter. HIGHGATE HARRIERS CELEBRATE OPENING OF BRAND NEW TRACK  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Completion of £2m refurbishment will “safeguard top level athletics for community for generations”. Highgate Harriers have marked the opening of their new athletics track at Parliament Hill, Hampstead, with a tester event (December 12). Hundreds of people from the club, from juniors to seniors, took to the track after the completion of a £2m refurbishment to the facilities by the City of London Corporation. The renovations took six months and were much more than just the track resurfacing. The foundations have been repaired with improved drainage, topped with a high-quality track surface that is set mid-way between a community and an elite performance track. This is designed to enable faster running times than standard community tracks. New energy efficient LED floodlighting has also been installed and Highgate Harriers have funded additional shelter at the site.

BEN NOAD, President of Highgate Harriers, said: “The generous investment from City of London Corporation will safeguard top level athletics for the surrounding community for the next generation. “Established in 1879, Highgate Harriers is one of the oldest athletics clubs in the country and plays an important role in the development of our sport from the local community, national level competition and right through to international events. “The new track will enhance the broader support the club gives to the sport, including facilitating Camden schools’ competitions, athletics for people with disabilities and hosting the National Cross Country Championships every three years.” CAL GORDON, who leads the Highgate Harriers senior endurance athletes B-Group, added: “What I feel makes Highgate Harriers unique is the depth of talent we have, which is one of our great selling points. We like to think what ever your level, we can raise your personal potential, just through training with one of our squads. “I started training with the club after a ‘get fit’ moment in my life and found my marathon time tumble from 4:19 to 2:54. Being part of a club that turns out so many elite athletes makes you want to raise your game and push that bit harder, well it did for me.” It’s also brilliant news for Night of the 10,000m PBs, one of the most celebrated domestic athletics events on the calendar.

Established in 2013, with the goal of improving British racing standards, Night of the 10,000m PBs has become synonymous with fast racing, an amazing atmosphere and an example of how to successfully market the sport. Over 200 leading endurance athletes from around the UK, and across the world, come to compete in 25-lap races. The next edition will be on Saturday May 18 and will incorporate the British 10,000m Olympic trials. The track renovations at Highgate secures the future of the event at Parliament Hill for a generation. BEN POCHEE, Race Director of Night of the 10,000m PBs said: “A refurbished Parliament Hill track offers us the twin bladed harpoon of hope every young aspiring athlete requires – continuity and long-term potential for growth. “For Night of the 10,000m PBs it provides a sumptuous tartan canvas for UK and international athletes to paint their aerobic dreams, from the 2024 Paris Olympic trials and up to 30 years of future proofed athletic opportunity. I am extremely grateful to the many individuals behind the scenes who worked together to make this new track a reality.” Highgate Harriers is a welcoming athletics club offering coaching and competition across the full spectrum of track and field, cross-country and road racing. As the anchor tenant at Parliament Hill, they have over 650 members across all age groups from U11 through to veterans, plus all abilities from elite athletes to those training for wellness. They also have specialist weekly training sessions for para-athletes and are North London’s premier club for running.

WHY CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING SHOULD ALWAYS GO AHEAD – WHATEVER THE WEATHER  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN at Mansfield the 2019.

An increasing number of event cancellations are an insult to the very essence of a sport that prides itself on gritting it out in tough conditions. The European Cross Country Championships in Brussels reminded everyone about the joys of running off-road. Parc de Laeken turned into a mudlark’s paradise on Sunday with the ground churning up progressively as the day unfolded. It is what traditionalists call “real cross-country racing”. Appearances can be deceptive, though. Children’s races that were due to take place before the European Championship events suffered a last-minute cancellation due to rainfall on the eve of the meeting. The organisers of these EnergyVision CrossCup races said they “couldn’t guarantee the safety of the kids running on the course”. This is not a one-off either. The culture of cross-country cancellations is spreading through the sport at an alarming rate.

In the UK there was uproar on Saturday when the South of England Inter-Counties and Masters Championships at Horspath near Oxford was called off when the under-13 girls in the first race were standing on the start line. Athletes had travelled from as far afield as Jersey and Cornwall, with some booking overnight stays in hotels, only to be told of an “unsafe course” that meant the races couldn’t go ahead, although some runners decided to run the course anyway. The South of England organisers added: “The referee decided to cancel because the first aid cover SEAA had arranged couldn’t, on the day, be provided to the majority of the course. Those who ran the course did so at their own risk as a training run.” GEORGE GANDY, the renowned distance running coach, would turn in his grave. “I didn’t think the word ‘cancel’ was part of a cross-country enthusiast’s vocabulary,” he once told AW.

This follows the cancellation of the London Youth Games at Parliament Hill in north London last month. On hearing the news, distance running legend DAVE BEDFORD accused current cross-country organisers of “having lost their way” following what he calls an “inexplicable cancellation”. He added: “I fear we have stealthily ushered in an era where the default position is to cancel, rather than go ahead. Youngsters of this generation are often unfairly characterised as ‘snowflakes’. Yet it is perhaps the older administrators who have lost their way, making decisions that deprive youngsters of the chance to compete. It risks undermining our nation’s ability to get the younger generation fit and enjoying the mental and physical benefits that outdoor competitive sports bring.” In its defence, the London Youth Games said: “For more experienced athletes with the right equipment the course would have been runnable. However, we pride ourselves on this event drawing many young people from many different backgrounds. Therefore, for some this would not have been a safe or enjoyable experience in the forecasted deteriorating conditions we were faced with.”

Earlier this winter Storm Babet led to the North of England Cross-Country Relay Championship at Graves Park in Sheffield and the British Masters Cross-Country Relays at Long Eaton in Nottinghamshire being among a number of events called off. These are unlikely to be the only events that bite the dust this winter either. Old-school cross-country runners will confirm such cancellations have become far more commonplace in the last decade or so. All of which begs the question, are today’s cross-country organisers soft or sensible? At this point you can probably guess where I stand – with GANDY and BEDFORD. Cross-country running is a winter sport, after all, and as we saw so gloriously in Brussels on Sunday, difficult conditions and muddy ground is a large part of its appeal.

Great Britain topped the medals table in style in Brussels. But if domestic cross-country cancellations continue then don’t be surprised to see the kings and queens of Europe one day lose their crown. When it comes to the rot setting in, I believe it can be traced back to the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Cross Country Championships in February 2009. The event was held in Aberdeen but was called off the day beforehand due to snowfall. Many of the teams were already on their way to the Scottish venue, though, in mini-buses and coaches at great expense. In an act of defiance, students arrived in Aberdeen anyway and around 240 of the original 1000-strong entries staged their own unofficial championships on the course.

The headline on AW’s front cover that week was “Snow joke” alongside a photo of ANDY VERNON who, along with LAUREN HEYES, ended up as the “winners”. Not surprisingly, there were no major injuries or casualties either apart from some bruises from snowball fights. A disgusted GANDY, who was in charge of a Loughborough University team that had spent an estimated £7000 on travel and accommodation, said: “I can’t recall any other senior event at national level being called off in over 50 years’ involvement in the sport – though foot-and-mouth threatened it – and I have certainly experienced plenty of snow, slush, ice, gales, floods, fog and transport challenges in that time.” Gandy, who died in 2020, added: “My impression was that course readjustments or venue switches were considered but that the word ‘cancel’ was not previously part of a cross-country enthusiast’s vocabulary.” Indeed, go back several generations and cross-country runners routinely had to run through streams, climb over fences and even crawl through barbed wire.

Later that year the English Schools Cross-Country Cup in Alnwick was also called off due to snow. However, eight years later the English Schools Athletics Association redeemed itself by going ahead with their national cross-country championships in Leeds despite the “Mini Beast from the East” blowing Polar continental air across the UK. On that latter occasion, athletes woke up to a stirring message from the English Schools organisers on social media, which read: “The weather forecast is brr… with strong winds bringing maybe about 20mm of snow… perhaps… no more. This is normal cross country weather in England and the Championships will go ahead as planned. “This is your chance to decry the increasing perception that kids nowadays are ‘snowflakes’! Turn up. Run. Get cold. Get muddy. Enjoy getting warm again! This is proper cross-country weather.” The rallying cry was met with almost universal approval and teenage runners who braved the Arctic conditions that day included KEELY HODGKINSON, who was runner-up to ELLA MCNIVEN in the inter girls’ race before going on to win Olympic 800m silver three years later.

Similarly, while last weekend’s South of England Inter-Counties near Oxford was called off, the North East Counties Championships at South Shields went ahead despite particularly boggy ground. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. While FINLAYSON and, clearly, officials from the North East Counties are refreshingly old school, however, too many organisers are calling events off due to bad weather. Often it is not simply because the course is water-logged or “dangerous” either, but sometimes it is simply down to road and rail transport disruption, problems with the car parking, or complaints from landowners that the ground will get churned up. Long before the term ‘health and safety’ even existed, Tim Johnston won the South of England cross-country title in 1963 and memorably said: “It started to snow heavily on Boxing Day 1962, then froze hard and snow stayed on the ground in depths varying from a few inches to drifts of several feet all through January and February until a slow thaw set in in early March, making the National on Coldham’s Common one of the wettest. muddiest ever. “All outdoor sport was cancelled with the exception of cross country. which thrived as never before. and we all became stars overnight. as there was nothing else to fill up the sports pages.”

With global warming a reality, we are likely to see more extreme weather in the winter, which will threaten an increasing number of cross-country races. The message to nervous organisers is that young athletes are tougher than we imagine. As for landowners worried about the ground being cut up? The grass will grow back and the memories of a fantastic cross-country race can last forever.

WOLLATON PARK TO STAGE THE 2024 UK INTER-COUNTIES CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

Big end-of-winter event moves to Nottingham venue after several years of being held at Prestwold Hall near Loughborough. The UK Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships will move to Wollaton Park this winter because the usual venue of Prestwold Hall is unavailable due to a clash with a motor-racing event. As well as being the de facto UK championships for cross country, the event incorporates the British Athletics Cross Challenge final and the trials for the World Cross Country Championships. It has been staged at Prestwold Hall – a few miles outside Loughborough – since 2017, with the owner of the 1000-hectare estate, EDWARD PACKE-DRURY-LOWE, being an enthusiastic host, often running barefoot on the estate’s rolling grassland in his spare time. However, Everyman Racing, who stage motor vehicle driving experiences at Prestwold throughout the year, have an event scheduled for the same day as the Inter-Counties of Saturday March 9.

CLIFF ROBINSON, the long-time Cross Challenge and Inter-Counties organiser, was offered Sunday March 10 for the popular annual athletics meeting but felt it was not an option due to athletes travelling from all corners of the UK and teenage athletes having school on Monday. The 2024 Inter-Counties will be an important event for young athletes with teams for the World Cross in Serbia selected from the meeting, whereas some senior athletes will be picked too from it. But after months of uncertainty, these trials will now be held a short distance away in Wollaton Park – a Nottingham venue that last staged the Inter-Counties in 2009 when STEPH TWELL and ANDY VERNON were among the winners. Read more:World Cross selection

Wollaton Park is of course already an established and popular venue on the domestic cross-country circuit. The Inter-Counties aside, Wollaton Park has staged major domestic cross-country meetings like the English National (2014, 2017 and 2020) and English Schools Champs (2023) in recent years.

YOU MAY SEE ATHLETES IN PARIS – THEY JUST WON’T BE IN ATHLETICS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

World Athletics president says the global track and field governing body will not budge when it comes to allowing Russians and Belarusians back into the sport. SEB COE insists World Athletics will not lift its ban on Russian and Belarus athletes despite the International Olympic Committee this week announcing that sportsmen and women from those two nations will now be allowed to compete at the Paris Olympics as long as they have not supported the war in Ukraine. “You may well see some neutral athletes from Russia and Belarus in Paris, but they just won’t be in from athletics,” said World Athletics president COE, who was speaking at the end of a two-day World Athletics council meeting in Monaco. “The position our sport took – and has consistently taken – on this is unchanged.” He added: “We have a fixed position and that’s not altered and I think it’s right that international federations should make judgements that they feel are in the best interests of their sport and that’s what our council has done. “Ours is a settled position. We’ve made the judgement that there will be no fully fledged or even neutral status athletes there.” At the moment only 12 Russian and six Belarusian athletes have Olympic standards for Paris with their leading medal contenders being high jumpers MARIYA LASITSKENE and DANIL LYSENKO plus pole vaulter ANZHEIKA SIDIROVA.

The IOC has controversially decided that people who qualify in individual sports will have to compete as “neutral” athletes in Paris – with no flags, emblems or anthems. What’s more, Russian and Belarusian teams will remain banned. COE also gave short shrift to the idea of a ‘friendship games’ being held next year in Russia. “I’m not getting too excited about that,” he said. “It doesn’t really fit within our own values and competitions structures. There also isn’t much room for it in an already complex and complicated calendar.” This week the World Athletics Council also confirmed the members of a Working Group, to be chaired by FRANCIS DODOO, on the status of Russians and Belarusians in international events.

In other news from COE’S press conference. Looking back at the World Champs in Budapest, Coe described it as “a first-rate event that left stakeholders and fans in no doubt that athletics is a sport that is punching its weight and on the move”. » The World Athletics Council approved the establishment of a World Plan Implementation Taskforce, to be chaired by former triple jumper Willie Banks, to build on the milestones achieved in the World Plan for Athletics 2022-2030 and continue to build on this momentum. » Despite the World Cross Country Championships moving to February recently – and reverting to March 30 in 2024 following the change of venue from Croatia to Serbia – the 2026 event in Tallahassee will be on the early date of January 10. » The 2025 World Road Running Championships in San Diego, meanwhile, will be on September 26-28 (slightly earlier than this year’s event in Riga) after athletes told World Athletics they wanted to finish their season as soon as possible.

Seeding for the first round of relays at the Paris Olympics will be determined at the World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas on May 4-5. Looking forward, COE added: “The year 2024 is going to be one of change. In a decade from now, I want people to look back at 2024 and say the decisions the sport made that year not only future proofed athletics, but significantly accelerated its popularity and value.”

RESULT
VICTORIA PARK SPORTS MEDICINE METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The third fixture of five took place at Hillingdon on 2 December.
On a muddy course at Hillingdon, we managed to maintain the results from Wormwood Scrubs, with another good turnout from all age-groups.

There were team wins from the Under 11 Boys and Under 15 Boys/17 Men. The Under 13 Girls and Under 15 Girls/17 Women finished in 2nd place, the Under 11 Girls finished 3rd and Under 13 Boys finished 8th. The Senior Men finished in 12th place, and Senior Women finished in 11th place.

These are our individual top 10 finishers – Under 11 Boys DENNYS PASCAL repeated his Wormwood Scrubs win HARRISON HENDERSON 7th – Under 11 Girls GRACE ROONEY 2nd, SIENNA DARCY 7th – Under 13 Girls AIMEE PORTER 4th – Under 15 Boys ARTHUR PHILLIPS 2nd, EUAN PHILLIPS 9th – Under 15 Girls POSIE SHAW 3rd – Under 17 Men RAFI GAYER 2nd, ADAM O’GORMAN 3rd, JORDAN PEARLMAN 7th, JACOB CLEMENT 8th, TOMMY NARVAEZ-WHITE 9th – Under 17 Women MYA MAIRS-INGRAM 4th, LARISSA WILSON 7th – Senior Men THOMAS BUTLER 5th.

The following is a summary of our team positions after 3 fixtures – Under 11 Boys are leading Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets by 75 points, not being too optimistic but with 2 fixtures left, we are looking good – Under 11 Girls we lost ground to our rivals, with 2 fixtures left, we have 1 point lead over Woodford Green & Essex Ladies, therefore at the next fixture at Welwyn we need a bigger turnout – Under 13 Boys we finished 8th, and are now 5th overall, at Welwyn we need a bigger turnout which will give us a chance of catching the 3rd place team London Heathside who have a 29 point lead – Under 13 Girls we lost ground to our rivals by finishing 8th, with 2 fixtures left, we are in 2nd place, we cannot catch St Mary’s Richmond, but Harrow who are in 3rd place are only 13 points behind us – Under 15 Boys/Under 17 Men are leading Woodford Green & Essex Ladies by 95 points, and again not being too optimistic but with 2 fixtures left, we are looking good – Under 15 Girls/Under 17 Women are in 3rd place, 3 points behind Woodford Green & Essex Ladies, but Herts Phoenix are just 4 points behind us, but with 2 fixtures left, it is going to be a fight to the finish – Senior Men, to be honest, short of a miracle we are in 12th place, to avoid relegation we need to make up 678 points on Thames Valley Harriers, to achieve this the team probably need to finish in 3rd/4th place at the final 2 fixtures – Senior Women, are in the same position as the Men, in 12th place. we are 93 points behind 10th place team Hillingdon, to give us a chance of avoiding relegation we need probably need at least 7-8 runners at the final 2 fixtures – Veteran Men, it has been an outstanding season, the team finished 2nd on Saturday, and also are 2nd place overall after 3 fixtures, with 2 fixtures left we are 129 points ahead of 3rd place Highgate Harriers, therefore we need a final push at Welwyn and Trent Park and promotion will be achieved.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES FUTURE IN DOUBT AFTER GOLD COAST WITHDRAWS 2026 BID  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Gold Coast hosted the Games in 2018 but becomes second Australian city to pull out of 2026 edition. The future of the Commonwealth Games is in doubt after Gold Coast scrapped its bid for the next instalment of the event.

Gold Coast, which held the Games back in 2018, stepped in after the state of Victoria decided that they couldn’t host due to costs increasing from £1.4 billion to £3.7 billion. To keep the 2026 edition in Australia, Gold Coast Mayor TOM TATE insisted they could do it again but only if the federal government helped cover the expenses. However, both federal and state governments have now ruled out supporting the event. “We did our best and that’s all people can expect,” Tate said in a statement on December 3. “In simple terms, it seems our Games’ vision doesn’t align with the vision of the state or federal governments.” The idea was to host a ‘streamlined’ Games for around £367m, which could be shared with Perth, a six-hour flight away. TATE’S proposal did not receive the required support though. “Our dual proposal with Perth would have saved Australia’s tarnished reputation, delivered billions into the national economy and given athletes, and para-athletes, a clear pathway towards other international competitions including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics and then on to the 2032 Games in Queensland,” he added.

It means the Commonwealth Games now doesn’t have a host for either 2026 or 2030. Just a month after Victoria stepped back from hosting the 2026 edition back in July, the Canadian province of Alberta withdrew its 2030 bid, also citing rising costs. Organisers now suggest the next Games may have to be moved to 2027 as they look at options to keep the event alive. Over 5000 athletes from 72 nations competed at Birmingham 2022, almost all of which are former territories of the British Empire.

INTERNATIONAL ATHLETICS COULD BE BACK AT CRYSTAL PALACE IN FIVE YEARS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of DAVE BEDFORD’S World Record in 1973 taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

Smaller-scale meets may take place beforehand but the current projection might see global events in 2028. Evolution, not revolution.

The plan to bring the glory days back to Crystal Palace is already underway and emphasis is on building what is already in place, not starting from scratch. Next to the main sports centre lies the once state-of-the-art 16,500 capacity stadium that hosted world-class events for decades and, if everything goes to plan, there is now a real prospect of the best in the business returning to Crystal Palace once again. Look at the stadium in its current state and that might be hard to believe. When AW visited in the summer, bird excrement covered both the indoor track and seats outside, the synthetic track was so worn away in places you could see the concrete and the floodlights had been taken away for safety reasons. Rightfully, those who have an affinity with the venue aren’t always overly optimistic after a decade of broken promises and plans going back to the drawing board. BEN WOODSwho AW exclusively spoke to at Crystal Palace back in July, is the man aiming to break that cycle.

Part of the team that helped deliver the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he was chosen by SADIQ KHAN to be Project Director at the Greater London Authority (GLA) for the redevelopment of Crystal Palace, a role that he has now been in since January 2023. Since his induction, short-term work on the track has already started. Last week (November 27), new temporary floodlights were installed, while the track has already been cleaned and refurbished. “We’ve done the vast majority of the track repairs now,” WOODS says. “There are a few bits of the inside lane that still needs doing. The final phase of that will be done in the spring and hopefully in March. “At that time we’ll get all the equipment out and tested. That’s when we’ll get the UKA certification which will allow for certain lower level competitions. We’ve worked with UKA to get the right lux levels of lighting for competitions. I’d say by next summer that the track, lighting and equipment are all in place.”

Woods, who grew up in Upper Norwood and watched the likes of STEVE CRAM and MICHAEL JOHNSON at the Grand Prix meets in the 1980s and 90s, states he understands the significance of athletics at Crystal Palace. “We’ve got a magnificent stage,” Woods adds. “Where else do you get that bowl in a listed park? The name Crystal Palace is also world famous. The stadium is beautifully designed and the acoustics are amazing. “I was at the Diamond League [at the Olympic Stadium] but at the end of the day it’s a one-off event. What about the rest of the year? That’s where I see Crystal Palace really fitting into that infrastructure. “A key home for London athletics and the wider region. We’re really excited about the potential for the stadium as a 365-day a year home for the sport.”

The obvious question then is, down the line can world-class athletics return to a venue which hosted the Diamond League from 1999 to 2012? “Short-term it’s [about] smaller-scale meets but for international style events we’re talking five years in the future,” says WOODS. If that timescale is fulfilled then the elite of track and field could compete at Crystal Palace in the same year as the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympics. However, WOODS is the first to emphasise that this is a long process and there is a way to go yet. After all, when Birmingham won the bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2017, it was delivered in 2022. That was a four-and-a- half to five-year project and WOODS is working on a similar timeframe at Crystal Palace. The project is split into two phases. While there are early works centred around the track, equipment and temporary floodlights; analysis and business plans are currently being drawn together for both the centre and the stadium. Right now, the focus is on talking to stakeholders, listening to residents and understanding the needs and concerns of people in the community. If planning application for the centre – which houses Olympic-sized swimming and diving pools that have been closed since March 2020 – is approved by Bromley Council next year, construction is scheduled to start on the main building from 2025 until the middle of 2026.

That means that diggers would be at the stadium, which is phase two, from just before 2027 onwards and with a projected completion in 2028. In this stage of the process, the idea is to install a new 400m track that could potentially be fit for both international competition and training. In addition, an accredited 200m track is also in the current plans, inspired by World Athletics’ ‘short-track’ announcement back in May, where athletes would be able to gain ranking points and set records on an outdoor 200m track. The newly built track at Crystal Palace would be based between the stadium and centre. It could also be used as a warm-up area for athletes before a competition. “I think athletics generally is looking at what are the event profiles moving forward and how can we make it more interesting for a youth market?” WOODS states. “We want to be part of those conversations and that’s why we’re also looking at the 200m ‘short-track’ from World Athletics. “The sprinting culture we have here is almost unique and it’s a hub. One of the real drivers is upgrading the indoor straight and we’re even seeing that as a potential event venue.” That’s not to say that events won’t happen in the short to medium term.

Currently, for safety reasons, the West Stand is closed and you can only fit 500 out of the capacity 4000-seater Jubilee Stand. “We’re looking at those structural checks at the minute of bringing the seating bowl up to standards,” WOODS adds. “We’re working on certification. The West Stand is completely closed while we have structural checks. The Jubilee Stand can still be used for events of 500 capacity. We’re looking at getting the whole of the Jubilee Stand certified. That allows for bigger events. We need to work on the analysis of the Jubilee Stand but I’d like to think that by next summer we are capable of hosting smaller events. “We’ve got to look at things like crowd loading and crash barriers for example as well as ease of access and ancillary areas like toilets. It’s a sound building [Jubilee Stand] and we’ve just got to polish it and make sure it works to get that license. Over the course of next year I’d like to think we can increase it from just 500 but I can’t promise it would be full capacity. That’s what we’re heading towards though. “Can we start to run school events down there with the capacity of 500-1000? Then work of regional championships, then national championships. We want this stadium, if it’s going to be the athletics home for London, to be that for every day of the year. This won’t live and die off a one-off event.”

There is a budget that has been signed off by City Hall but those associated with the project understand the significance of sponsorship, especially with the long-term redevelopment of the stadium. Given the cultural and historical significance of athletics at Crystal Palace, the offer is a strong one. “We’ve got this stage and want to bring it back to life,” WOODS says. “We’ve got some capital funding but it’s the ‘what if question’. If it grows and we get that viable business plan then there’s the potential of not ‘what is’ but to actually expand slightly. It’s really dependant on others coming on that journey and so far the mood music has been very positive. “We have a 15-16,000 capacity stadium as we speak but that could be so much more. Whether that’s VIP, hospitality, increased capacity or modern standards of HD lighting? That’s the supercharged point. We’re open for business. “We have the stage and it’s 85% there. Can someone come in and help us with that final 15%? We want a stadium not just fit for the 21st but the 22nd century.”
