EMMA GOUGE who is the Stadium Athletics and SBH Co-Ordinator had advised me that any athletes coming outside the usual Tuesday and Thursday that they can tap and go with the sum up machine in West reception or scan the QR code, which they will find on the pedestrian gate on entry. We would remind you that athletes should not come through the clubhuse without paying the entry fee. This gets picked up, not only by other athletes that pay, and find it very frustrating and unfair, but also by Saracens security system which can result in a fine, and a ban from using the facility.
SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS SUBSCRIPTIONS – Our new Club year started on 1 October 2024. The current SBH annual subscription is £85 (following the 2024 SBH AGM) and the current England Athletics annual registration from 1 April 2025 is £20. The current total is £105 and you will be advised via the SBH Membermojo system, when your subscription and EA fees are due for payment.

WHY SPRINT NIGHTS WILL LIGHT UP BIRMINGHAM 2026 – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
The European Athletics Championships will start with a bang next August with both 100m finals in the opening two days. Monday evening on August 10 will see medals decided for the women’s 100m, whereas Tuesday August 11 features the men’s 100m.
There will be plenty of British interest, too, in the race to be crowned the sprint king and queen of Europe. DINA ASHER-SMITH is the reigning European women’s 100m champion and is likely to be defending her title. Some of her biggest rivals, though, could also be team-mates with AMY HUNT and DARYLL NEITA being in such great form in recent years. HUNT won world 200m silver in 2025 whereas NEITA came within inches of winning the European 200m title in Rome two years ago, losing out by just one hundredth of a second to MUJINGA KAMBUNDJI of Switzerland. KAMBUNDJI is likely to be in the mix in Birmingham 2026, too. Look out as well for the European 100m silver and bronze medallists from 2024 – EWA SWOBODA of Poland and ZAYNAB DOSSO of Italy.
GINA LUCKENKEMPER of Germany won the European title on home soil in Munich in 2022 and remains a force to be reckoned with. Other possible contenders include PATRIZA VAN DER WEKEN of Luxembourg. Birmingham 2026 will probably come too soon for KELLY DOUALLA, however, as she will still only be 16 years old – but the Italian youngster stormed to European under-20 gold this year and looks destined for greatness.
At the European Championships in Rome in 2026, Italians dominated on home soil with MARCEL JACOBS winning gold from team-mate CHITURU ALI and Britain’s ROMELL GLAVE was third. Home advantage does help so competing in Birmingham will no doubt give a boost to the British sprinters led by UK record-holder ZHARNEL HUGHES. HUGHES won the European 100m title in 2018 and 200m gold in 2022. Depending on who qualifies for the team, he could be joined by athletes such as GLAVE, JEREMIAH AZU, LOUIE HINCHCLIFFE and EUGENE AMO-DADZIE.
AZU won European and world indoor 60m titles in 2025 whereas AMO-DADZIE won the 100m at the European Team Championships and clocked a late-season (9.87) to go equal second on the UK all-time rankings. Possible rivals include Italians JACOBS and ALI, plus ELVIS AFRIFA of the Netherlands, HENRIK LARSSON of Sweden and OWEN ANSAH of Germany.

The women’s 100m heats are in the morning of Monday August 10 with the semi-finals at 8.10pm and final 9.50pm. The men’s 100m heats are on the morning of Tuesday August 11 with the semi-finals at 8.30pm and final 9.45pm.
In 2026 these athletes will be battling it out for European titles in Birmingham from August 10-16. Tickets are still available here.
VICTOR CONTE, ARCHITECT OF THE BALCO SCANDAL, DIES AGED 75 – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
American gave drugs to MARION JONES, TIM MONTGOMERY and DWAIN CHAMBERS but later became an anti-doping advocate. VICTOR CONTE, one of the notorious steroid suppliers in athletics history, has died aged 75. Athletes MARION JONES, TIM MONTGOMERY, CJ HUNTER, KELLI WHITE and DWAIN CHAMBERS were among his clients at the turn of the millennium as his “Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative” sports nutrition company secretly served steroids to dozens of elite sportspeople.
JONES won three golds and two bronze medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, but was later stripped of her medals after admitting to lying to federal investigators about her use of performance-enhancing drugs. MONTGOMERY, meanwhile, set a world 100m record of (9.78) in 2002 but later had his record disqualified, whereas CHAMBERS was one of Britain’s highest-profile athletes during that period but was given a drugs ban and stripped of his European 100m title.
CONTE died on Monday (Nov 4) after having suffered from pancreatic cancer with his most recent nutrition company, SNAC, saying: “We are Heartbroken by the Passing of our Fearless Leader, SNAC Mastermind | SNAC CEO | Anti-Doping Advocate | Creator of ZMA | Former Tower of Power and HERBIE HANCOCK BASSIST.” CONTE started life as a rock and roll musician but set up BALCO in 1983, initially selling vitamin and mineral supplements, before creating performance-enhancing drugs such tetrahydrogestrinone, which was dubbed “the Clear”.
When the BALCO scandal erupted in 2003, discovered steroids and growth hormones in a warehouse and lists of names of the clients and their dosage plans. The track and field athletes aside, a number of baseball players and well-known boxers and NFL players were implicated. The biggest name of all, JONES, served six months in jail in 2008 for lying under oath although she the only athlete to go to prison due to the BALCO scandal. CONT also had four months in jail and later returned to the sports nutrition business with the creation of the Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning or SNAC System, billing himself as an anti-doping advocate and giving advice to the World Anti-Doping Agency on how to catch cheats. CONT remained defiant, however, about helping athletes, arguing that he levelled the playing field and that the world was rife with cheating.
THE THIRD RE-UNION AT THE SHAFTESBURY TAVERN – Following last years succesful meet up, therefore this year their will be another get together in the Shaftesbury Tavern in Hornsey. We will be meeting at 7pm on Monday 1 December 2025. The Shaftesbury Tavern is located on the corner of Shaftesbury Road and Hornsey Road. It would be great to see some of you there! there will be a few drinks, good Thai (and other food) and most importantly good company and conversation!
The Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Centenary Year Book states: And so it came about that in 1890 a few lads, most of whom would have been about 16 years of age, assembled at Jubilee Hall and decided to form a running club and called it Shaftesbury Harriers. Jubilee Hall was then newly built and used for dances, concerts and such-like social events, and was over what was then called a coffee tavern. It stood at the corner of Hornsey Road and Fairbridge Road, not far from Hornsey Road railway station, and about a mile from Hampstead Heath.
It seems probable that, like others of the many clubs being formed about that time, the title came from a road in the district. Possibly some lads lived in Shaftesbury Road close by: with its tall Victorian houses the road has not changed so much with the passing years. The Shaftesbury Tavern is still on the corner.
