These invitations will be confirmed this week and the athletes announced in due course. Athletes who have been nominated for selection as part of this process have been contacted by their Lead performance contact to confirm this.

Congratulations to the four Shaftesbury athletes who will be on the plane to Tokyo – ZHARNEL HUGHES 100m and 4x100m Relay (Coach GLEN MILLS), MICHAEL OHIOZE 4x400m Relay (DAN TOMLIN), LIZZIE BIRD 3000m Steeplechase (PAT MCCURRY) and SCOTT LINCOLN Shot Put (PAUL WILSON).

SHAFTESBURY FINISHED TOP CLUB IN THE BRITISH ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – England Athletics have confirmed, that following the results in the Championships, Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers finished as top club with 91 points, second were Birchfield Harriers with 80 points and third Windsor, Slough Eton and Hounslow with 66 points.

BRITISH ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place last Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Manchester. It turned out to be another successful Championships for Shaftesbury, with many highs and not too many lows. With 37 athletes competing, we came away with 4 British Champions, also 2 silver and 4 bronze medals, quite a few just missing out on a medal.

Of the 4 gold medalists, 2 were won by our 3000m steeplechasers, who prior to these Championships were both ranked UK No.2 in 2021.

Saturday featured the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase, in which LIZZIE BIRD had already achieved the Olympic qualification time (9:30.00) in Portland, Oregon on 28 May. Her previous appearance in these championships was in 2018, when she finished 2nd to the then current UK No.1 ROSIE CLARKE, and after a final sprint to the line, LIZZIE was just .29 of a second behind. LIZZIE’S main opposition on Saturday was AIMEE PRATT, who coincidentally is the current UK No.1. From the gun AIMEE went to the front, with LIZZIE in close attendance, after 2 laps the two of them had by then opened a gap of some 40m. AIMEE gradually increased the pace, but LIZZIE sat in just behind her, at the bell it was status quo, then as they approached the final water jump, LIZZIE accelerated and came out of the water with a metre lead, she then went on to take the final barrier with a 10m lead and crossed the line 4.16 seconds ahead of AIMEE.

Just as LIZZIE had finished, SCOTT LINCOLN was beginning the defence of the Men’s Shot Put title, in fact SCOTT had won the previous 6 championships going back to 2015. SCOTT had already achieved the Olympic qualification distance of (21.10m) in Brno, Czech Republic on 13 June. In the championships SCOTT’S first attempt was (20.00m) which virtually sealed the title for him, and he achieved his winning put with his final attempt (20.22m). In second place was PATRICK SWAN of Cornwall with (16.98m).

DANIEL BAINBRIDGE had started the final of the Javelin, whilst SCOTT was winning the Shot Put title. DANIEL who has just turned 22 years of age, started athletics in 2010 with his local club, ‘City of Norwich’, and his progression was outstanding through his Youths period. His major breakthrough as a a first year Under 20, was in 2016 when he won the England Under 20 Championships, in 2017. In 2017 DANIEL made the decision to join Shaftesbury, and won the English Schools Championships, then in 2018 won the England Under 20 Championships for the second time, also he started at Loughborough University. In early 2020 DANIEL became a (70.00m) thrower, and in the British Championships that year finished in 2nd place with (70.50m). In 2021 he threw his personal best (73.73m), also winning the England Under 23 Championships two weeks ago. Saturday’s competition, his opening throw was (69.91m), which put him in first place, following the end of the fifth round, he was lying in fourth place, DANIEL’S final attempt proved to be decisive, with a throw of (72.66m), and became the British Champion by just 1cm.

On the final day, it was the turn of MARK PEARCE in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase. From the gun the pace was good, then with just under five laps to go MARK went to the front, followed by ZAC SEDDON, UK No.1 and PHIL NORMAN last year’s champion. With two laps to go PHIL was detached by some 5m, at the bell MARK was still leading, then halfway down the back strait ZAC made his move, to open up a 3-4m lead, MARK managed to hold it at that, with the final barrier approaching MARK was gradually closing the gap, he hurdled the barrier the better of the two, and the momentum was with him and he moved past ZAC to cross the line to win by .25 of a second.

MARK joined Shaftesbury in 2008, aged 12, and his events were the 1500m/300m and cross country. He went to Birmingham University from 2015 to 2019, it was then in 2018 MARK ran his first 3000m Steeplechase race (9:27.56), he finished the year by finishing 8th in the British Championships (8:56.45). 2019 he reduced his time to (8:42.63) and again finished 8th in the British Championships. 2020 he attended Keele University, and the second of his two Steeplechase he finished 2nd in the British Championships to PHIL NORMAN by .10 of a second.

There were Silver Medals from SHADINE DUQUEMIN (Discus), NICK PERCY (Discus) and CHRIS BENNETT (Hammer), also Bronze Medals from MICHAEL OHIOZE (400m), DAVID SMITH (High Jump, EFE UWAIFO (Triple Jump) and GREGORY THOMPSON (Discus).

JONAH MARKSTwo weeks ago I published the achievements JONAH has made to date. His father SIMON sent me the latest update on JONAH.

Unfortunately, British Triathlon has been unable to send a team to the European champs this year due to Covid restrictions, but it’s looking hopeful that JONAH will be able to represent his country at the rearranged World Duathlon Championships in Spain this November. In addition, combining his running talent with the swimming he does as part of Barnet Copthall Swimming Club, he has also qualified for the European and World Sprint Triathlon champs in 2021 and 2022. At present, we are still holding out for travel to Spain in September to be possible for the European champs.

Fingers crossed that international travel is easier next year, when JONAH has the opportunity to race at the World Duathlon champs in Townsville, Australia and the World Triathlon champs in Montreal, Canada. He hasn’t got his GB tri-suit yet, but here’s a couple of photos in his team t-shirt down at Highgate Men’s Pond last Friday after doing some open-water training.

JONATHAN KILSBY’S MEMORIAL DAYJONATHAN loved Trent Park; as children, we lived only a few hundred yards from its entrance and, throughout his life, it was a one of his favourite training areas.  To commemorate JONATHAN’S life, we are going to have a walk-in Trent Park on Saturday 31st July.  All of JONATHAN’S friends, family and colleagues are invited to join us.  It will be a very informal event, with a walk of about an hour to one of JONATHAN’S most loved areas of the park, where we will stop and have our own thoughts about his kind, good humoured and generous life.

We will meet at midday at the carpark by the Trent Park Café, near the Cockfosters entrance to the park. (Post code: EN4 0JY).  https://goo.gl/maps/GoZe6V4hvt18MpZKA/a>
If you are a runner then, on the same morning, Barnet and District Athletic Club will be completing their training session in JONATHAN’S memory.  They will be meeting at 9:00 at the same location and training for around 90 minutes.  Runners from all JONATHAN’S former running clubs and of all abilities are welcome.
There is no need, at this point, to let us know if you intend coming along.  We appreciate that planning anything at the moment has its challenges, particularly two months in advance.  We will email again, two weeks before the 31st July, with any further details and updates to the day.

Shaftesbury’s ANGUS MCKENZIE was appointed as Competition Manager (Athletics) last year, and the article on him can be found in the 26 November SBH Newsletter.

SBH SUBSCRIPTIONS 2020-2021 SBH Treasurer GEOFF MORPHITIS has sent me the following regarding subscriptions.
The Club AGM took place virtually at 19.30 on Tuesday 24 November. One of the resolutions which was passed dealt with Club Subscriptions as follows. “The Annual Membership Fee for new members from 1 December 2020 will increase to £50. Existing members who have paid their membership fee for year ended 30 September 2020 will be considered as having also paid their fee for the year ended 30 September 2021.
In other words, in recognition of the disruption caused by Covid-19, these members will have 2 years membership for the price of one.” Therefore, I’m now asking athletes who have not paid their subscription for the year ended 30/09/20 (£45) to pay, so as to qualify for the 2 for 1 concession together with the England Athletics Registration Fee of £15 for 2020/21. The total is £60 and should be paid NOW to; ACCOUNT NAME: SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS, BANK: HSBC, ACCOUNT NUMBER: 41308378, SORT CODE: 400426 – Please let me know when payment is made. Thanks GEOFF

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
