COMMONWEALTH GAMES, THE OPENING CEREMONY Set the scene on what is to come over the next 11 days. Crammed with references to the host city’s history and culture, the two-and-a-half-hour opening ceremony marked the start of Britain’s biggest multi-sport event since the London Olympics. Seventy-two red, white and blue cars, forming a union jack as the Red Arrows flew overhead, marked the entrance of PRINCE CHARLES and the DUCHESS OF CORNWALL, who arrived in a blue Aston Martin DB6.

The most visually impressive element of the show was the raging bull, a giant aluminium and steel puppet constructed around a forklift truck-like machine from materials sourced in local factories. It was dragged into the stadium by 50 women representing chainmakers from the Industrial Revolution. There was also a group of giant puppets portraying regional pioneers such as EDWARD ELGAR, WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and SAMUEL JOHNSON, while another set piece involved a parade of trucks featuring Birmingham inventions such as pen nibs, police whistles and the Baskerville font. DURAN DURAN closed the show with a rendition of their greatest hits, as fireworks flared over the newly refurbished Alexander Stadium.

“We tried to give everything an edge. The canal water that the tower rises out of has an old bike and shopping trolley in it,” said the set designer MISTY BUCKLEY. “There’s a bit of humour and a bit of wit that says, ‘We’re still in Birmingham, we’re not taking ourselves too seriously here.’”

COMMONWEALTH GAMES, RESULTS
DAY 1 – 29 JULY – BETH POTTER represented Scotland in her third Commonwealth Games In 2014 at Hampden Park, Scotland BETH finished fifth in the 10000m (32:33.36) and 4 days later finished ninth in the 5000m (15:44.38). Prior to the 2018 Games on the Gold Coast in Australia, BETH took the decision in 2017 to concentrate on the Triathlon. In 2018 BETH finished twelfth in the Triathlon (59.50), and in the mixed relay competing for Scotland. they finished seventh (1:22.21). Then on the track finished eightieth in the 10000m (33:26.78). Coming into the 2022 Games, BETH’S results have been outstanding. The Triathlon started with a 750m swim, in which BETH was first out of water (9.20), the 20k bike saw the eventual winner FLORA DUFFY open up a 1 minute lead, with BETH in third place (29.22), in the 5k run, BETH ran the third fastest time (16.53), which brought her home with an outstanding Bronze Medal (56.46).

DAY 3 – 31 JULY – BETH competed in the mixed relay for Scotland. In which they finished in an excellent fifth place (1:18.35).

DAY 5 – 2 AUGUST NICK PERCY started his Discus qualification in group A, and with his second throw recorded (60.68m), which put him in third place and a place in Thursday’s Final. NICK’S recent personal best is (65,00m), and if he can get anywhere near that will have a good chance of a medal. NICK competed in the 2014 Commonwealth Games, where he finished fifth in the qualification (56.71m).

JADE LALLY led the Discus Final with a (57.33m) first round effort, but ONYEKWERE hit back to take the lead with (61.70m) in the fourth round. JADE, improved to (58.42m) in the final round but it was too little too late, winning the Silver Medal. She won bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and threw an English record of (65.10m) in 2016 – a mark that is No.2 on the UK all-time rankings behind the long-standing British record of (67.48m) held by MEG RITCHIE. Outside athletics JADE is also a world indoor rowing champion. Photograph by MARK SHEARMAN.

CAN YOU HELP PLEASEI would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
