YOUTH TALENT PROGRAMME 2019-2021 – Congratulations to EMILY HATHAWAY and FREYA STAPLETON have been selected for the Youth Talent Programme for the next 2 years.
It’s the first stage of the Performance Pathway for young athletes in England aged 16. The programme (formerly AASE) a collaboration between England Athletics and British Athletics gives athletes the opportunity to learn, train and develop the necessary skills to progress on to becoming a senior international and is there to compliment your club training with your personal coach. This is a fantastic achievement as only a focused number of athletes across England have been shortlisted and identified to be part of the programme, which is there to confirm and support long term GB and Commonwealth Games potential.

ROSS SAMBROOK IN FOR A SHOCK – The following article was published in the “Metro” on 23 October.
The grandson of ex-Kazakhstan president NURSULTAN NAZARBAYEV broke into a pensioner’s flat to do his washing and bit a policeman.
AISULTAN NAZARBAYEV, 30, was chased by SGT ROSS SAMBROOK after the elderly woman came home to find he had smashed her pots and put his clothes in the machine on 5 June. The cocaine addict bit the officer after being tasered in Covent Garden, London.
NAZARBAYEV admitted assault and criminal damage. He received an 18-month suspended jail term at Southward crown court.
STUART SINGER’S VIEWS ON THE NHS – The following article was published in the “Economia” which is the monthly magazine of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
STUART has run marathon’s around the globe with his PB (3:18.48) in the London Marathon in 2012, also mainly at the Oak Hill Parkrun has now completed 272 races. STUART is a partner at RBP, a firm of specialist medical accountants.
There’s a good reason why the topic of privatisation of the NHS is so controversial. Privatisation sounds the death knell for BEVAN’S vision of free healthcare or all at the point of delivery, based on need, not on wealth.
The increasing demands of an ageing population and the financial restraints responsible for squeezing the health service of the necessary investments resulted in an institution that has begun to buckle. But this is no excuse for betraying the founding principles of a free NHS.
To my mind it’s impossible to apply business methods and the profit motives to the provision of healthcare. Put yourself in the shoes of any doctor tasked with explaining to their patient that they’re unable to operate because it’s not cost-effective!
To hamper devoted professionals with the economic restraints of targets and quotas flies in the face of their Hippocratic Oath to do no harm.

THE CLOCKS WENT BACK 1 HOUR ON SUNDAY 27 OCTOBER – The significance of this is that on training evenings it will be dark during your warm up/down period. Could I advise all athletes to wear something Bright at Night, especially on Tuesday and Thursday training evenings. Please be safe, when running on the roads, especially within Copthall from wearing dark clothing. For your safety, we have a number of Hi-Vis bibs in the clubhouse which you can borrow at the beginning of your run and return at the end of it.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The second fixture of five takes place on Saturday 9 November at Stanborough Park, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire (SatNav AL8 6DF).
Race Headquarters – Adjacent to the building by the playground at the north end of the north car park, close to the Start/Finish, refreshments will be available in this area. Registration will be adjacent to the Start/Finish.
Changing Facilities – There are changing rooms on the south side of the park, by the Sailing Centre.
Toilets are available in the building by the playground. Extra toilets will be provided nearby.
There are also toilets located at the Sailing Centre on the south side of the Park.
Course Location – North Side Stanborough Park – The Fixture Information and the course maps have been issued on the basis that we are able to use the field adjacent to the playground for an assembly area and for the finishing funnel. There is however the possibility that works will be starting in this field prior to 9 November. I have therefore drawn up some maps with an alternative position for the finishing funnel and appropriate adjustments to the course. These arrangements are less satisfactory than the ones I have issued so, as there is still no sign of the works starting, I am gambling on the hope that the field will still be clear on 9 November.
Course Description – Start and Finish in grassed field, remainder undulating parkland course suitable for spikes.
Public Transport – Welwyn Garden City Station (Main Line) 1.25 miles.
Directions From Major Roads – Leave the A1(M) at Junction 4, (after the Hatfield Tunnel). At the roundabout take the second exit to A414/A6129. At the next roundabout take the first exit A6129. At the bottom of the dual carriageway take the second exit out of the roundabout. The entrance to the car park on the north side is on your left after around 100m. The entrance to the car park on the south side is more or less opposite but you cannot gain access from the left side of the carriageway.
As early arrivers will undoubtedly fill the car park on the north side, you may be advised to go straight to the one on the south side.
Parking – There is a fairly large car park on the north side of the Park, adjacent to the course.
There is a very large car park on the south side of the Park, 5 minutes walk to the course.
These car parks operate by automatic number plate recognition. You must pay or you may incur a fine. Unfortunately we have not been able to negotiate a reduced rate this year, a list of the charges are published adjacent to this. It is a good idea to share cars and share costs. If you choose to park on the local roads, please park considerately and avoid causing any annoyance to residents.
YOU ARE ADVISED TO ALLOW SUFFICIENT TIME TO PARK AND PAY
There is a footpath under the road bridge, providing traffic-free access between the south side and the north side of the Park.
Access to both of these car parks is only permitted from the adjacent side of the carriageway. If you cannot find a space on the north side, to get to the south side you must drive to the roundabout at the top of the hill and return on the other side of the carriageway
YOU MUST OBEY THE TRAFFIC SIGNS
