A SAD LOSS – This week we heard the tragic news that one of our long standing members, GLASFORD JONES, sadly passed away peacefully on 24 September after a massive heart attack at the age of 58. He was a larger than life character whose love of sport was reflected in both his competition days and more recently as a coach and official.
GLASFORD joined us in 1993 at the age of 31. He went on to compete in Master’s events as a sprinter and long jumper. He lived in the Luton area and was responsible for attracting a number of local lads to SBH including JAYSON TOAL and GARY SMITH.
His love of sport was not limited to athletics as he was also very active in amateur football being a founder member and remained a staunch supporter of all things Luton United. Anyone who knew or had the pleasure of meeting GLASFORD will always remember his booming voice and infectious laugh. He will be sorely missed.

SARACENS EMBARK ON A NEW CHAPTER – Saracens announced on 1 October 2021, that a consortium of investors has agreed terms to acquire a majority controlling stake in Saracens. Attached is the announcement from NEIL GOLDING Chairman of Saracens, and a separate statement outlining their objectives for the future. The initial part of that statement refers to the following – ‘The capital raised in a total investment of GBP 32 million of new funds into the club. Aside from maintaining the club’s position at the top of the men’s game, the new funds will be used for a variety of other purposes, including redevelopment of the West Stand; further investment in women’s sport; and the establishment of a high-performance training centre’.

The SBH Executive committee will be following up on this announcement to establish where athletics fits into the Saracens plans.

VIRGIN MONEY MINI MARATHON – Speaking to RAY POWELL, this was his assessment of the new start area on the Embankment.
It was always going to be a learning curve, especially as it was totally outdoors, with the holding area outside Temple Station, compared to the holding area for athletes which was inside Old Billingsgate itself, next to Monument Station. Fortunately, the weather, although a little chilly, we were thankful that the rain held off. There were a few small issues, which were expected, but generally it went very well, and everyone seemed to have a good time.

Photograph of our team – many thanks to you all on an outstanding achievement on the Embankment, and to everyone else who were at the other races throughout the Summer

SBH SUBSCRIPTIONS 2020-2021 SBH Treasurer GEOFF MORPHITIS has sent me the following regarding subscriptions.
The Club AGM took place virtually at 19.30 on Tuesday 24 November. One of the resolutions which was passed dealt with Club Subscriptions as follows. “The Annual Membership Fee for new members from 1 December 2020 will increase to £50. Existing members who have paid their membership fee for year ended 30 September 2020 will be considered as having also paid their fee for the year ended 30 September 2021.
In other words, in recognition of the disruption caused by Covid-19, these members will have 2 years membership for the price of one.” Therefore, I’m now asking athletes who have not paid their subscription for the year ended 30/09/20 (£45) to pay, so as to qualify for the 2 for 1 concession together with the England Athletics Registration Fee of £15 for 2020/21. The total is £60 and should be paid NOW to; ACCOUNT NAME: SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS, BANK: HSBC, ACCOUNT NUMBER: 41308378, SORT CODE: 400426 – Please let me know when payment is made. Thanks GEOFF

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
