EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS – Congratulations to the following Shaftesbury athletes who has been selected by GB&NI, to compete at the European Championships on 6-10 July in Amsterdam, Netherlands. ZHARNEL HUGHES U23 (200m and 4x100m Relay), DARYLL NEITA U23 (4x100m Relay), OJIE EDOBURUN U23 (4x100m Relay), MELISSA COURTNEY (1500m), DAN BRAMBLE (Long Jump), JADE LALLY (Discus) and CHRIS BENNETT (Hammer). Also congratulations to ANTONIO INFANTINO (200m) who has been selected to compete for Italy, and RICHARD MORRISSEY (400m) has been selected to compete for Ireland.

EUROPEAN YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS – Congratulations to GEORGE GROOM who has been selected by GB&NI, in Tbilisi, Georgia on 14-17 July. GEORGE will be competing in the 2000m Steeplechase. He ran his first ever 2000m Steeplechase on 4 June (5:57.08) which ranks him UK No.1.

NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to RACHEL CARTER who broke the Under 17 Women 300m Hurdles Club Record (46.48) in the UK Youth Development League at Allianz Park on 26 June. RACHEL eclipsed KATIE BROOKS (46.9), which was set on 10 June 1998.

NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to CHRIS BENNETT who set a new Senior Hammer personal best (76.45m) on 18 June at the the Budapest International Open Meeting. Adding 99cm to his (75.46m) which he set on 15 May this year, and is ranked UK No.2 in 2016.

NENE HARRISON – Congratulations to NENE who became the British Masters V35 Pentathlon Champion at Horspath, Oxford on 19 June. And recorded a personal best (2057 Points) – 800m (SB 3:10.75), 100m Hurdles (PB 19.81 w-1.5) taking .39 of a second off her 2015 time, High Jump (1.36m), Long Jump (4.13m w4.1), Shot 3kg (PB 9.44m)

OLIVIA LAVA U13 – Who was featured in last weeks newsletter, appeared on television last week playing the part of Jack in the CBBC football drama Jamie Johnson.

NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to MELISSA COURTNEY who ran in the IAAF Diamond League at Birmingham last Sunday. MELISSA recorded a personal best (4:07.55) taking 2.29 seconds off her 2015 time, and ranks her UK No.3 in 2016. This is also a new 1500m senior club record eclipsing Joyce Smith’s (4:09.37) which was set in Munich on 7 September 1972. 

GEORGE GROOM U17 – Ran his first 2000m Steeplechase at the Milton Keynes open meeting last Saturday. He ran an astonishing (5:57.08) which ranks him UK No.1 U17 in 2016, also puts him at UK No.4 in the all-time list. Finally last but not least, is a qualification standard (6:05.00) for the European Youth Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia on 14-17 July.

THIS SATURDAY 4 JUNE – Our Senior Men will be looking on improving their fourth place finish in the first British Athletic League fixture at Lee Valley, with an improved performance in Manchester (Satnav M11 3FF). Also our Senior Women, following promotion last season to the top division of the UK Women’s Athletic League, contest the first of three fixtures at Swansea (Satnav SA2 8QB). I anticipate crossing the Bristol Channel from Somerset to support the team.

THIS SUNDAY 5 JUNE – Our Young Athletes move onto Watford (Satnav WD25 7HH) in the third fixture of five in the Eastern Young Athletes League, the composite team with Barnet are in 6th place overall after the first two fixtures.

VITALITY WESTMINSTER MILE – Took place last Saturday on the Mall in London.

Under 11 Boys – ARON YONA 25th (6.12) the winner was Benjamin Brown of Southampton (5.10)

Under 13 Boys – LUCA STUBBS 15th (5.15), DYLAN MICHEL 22nd (5.22), NATHAN MASTERS 46th (5.49) the winner was Rowan Fuss of Blackheath & Bromley (4.45)

Under 15 Boys – THOMAS PATRICK 5th (4.36), FINN HARVEY 18th (4.48), DAVID STONE 23rd (4.52), HENRY FULTON 36th (5.07) the winner was Joshua Cowperthwaite of Middlesborough (4.22)

Under 15 Girls – KAYLA MICHEL 20th (5.58) the winner was Yasmin Marghini of Blackheath & Bromley (5.03)
