NEW CLUB RECORD Congratulations to MELISSA COURTNEY who ran in the IAAF Diamond League at Birmingham last Sunday. MELISSA recorded a personal best (4:07.55) taking 2.29 seconds off her 2015 time, and ranks her UK No.3 in 2016. This is also a new 1500m senior club record eclipsing Joyce Smith’s (4:09.37) which was set in Munich on 7 September 1972.

GEORGE GROOM U17 Ran his first 2000m Steeplechase at the Milton Keynes open meeting last Saturday. He ran an astonishing (5:57.08) which ranks him UK No.1 U17 in 2016, also puts him at UK No.4 in the all-time list. Finally last but not least, is a qualification standard (6:05.00) for the European Youth Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia on 14-17 July.

BRITISH ATHLETIC LEAGUE PREMIERSHIP The second fixture of four took place last Saurday in Manchester.

After some excellent individual performances with PBs and SBs, it was a disappointing end result with the team finding itself outside the top half of the table midway through the season for the first time in 4 years. No more could be asked of the athletes at the meeting, but if we have genuine aspirations of winning the Premiership and competing against the best clubs in Europe, we need our members to prioritise these meetings.

It was great to have SEB RODGER back in the squad and his sub 50 time in winning the 400m H was not only a SB but also one of the fastest ever times run in the Premiership. SEB also ran an outdoor SB in coming through to 2nd place in the 400m. A much better performance from LLOYD HANLEY-BYRON saw him secure a fine 2nd place in the “B” 400m H with a SB time. Both 800m races were quality events. It was great to see our 2 top Juniors from 2015 producing good performances at this level. KYLE LANGFORD showed a welcome return to racing after recovery from a long term injury although he was just out-dipped on the line by the fast finishing Sheffield runner by 1/100 of a second. BEN ROCHFORD was a clear winner of the “B” string race running his second sub 1.51 race in a week.

The field events were equally impressive in parts with ALLAN SMITH being the clear winner of the High Jump with 2.25m and our Discus duo of ZANE DUQUEMIN and GREGORY THOMPSON winning the “A” and “B” events. ZANE was once again over the 60m barrier. The Triple Jump produced the first ever “A” string victory for NONSO OKOLO who was again over 16m as was NATHAN FOX who was competing as a guest.

Embarrassingly, the Women’s 4 x 400m team who were convincing winners in Swansea ran 4 seconds quicker than the Men’s team in Manchester!!! We must and will do better in our 2 remaining matches. The next round is on Saturday 2 July at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham

MANCHESTER INTERNATIONAL ATHLETICS MEETING The British Athletics League and the UK Women’s League are pleased to confirm that they will be fielding a joint representative team at the Manchester International Athletics Meeting on Wednesday 17 August.

The meeting will see the team, selected from members of BAL and UKWL clubs who have shown commitment to competing in the league in 2016, up against England, Wales, Scotland and other international teams, in a new climax to the domestic season.

The event will take place at the Manchester Regional Arena and will see athletes from across the UK in action in a meeting that will form the centerpiece of a wider festival of athletics and running.

The BAL and UKWL will publish a full selection policy for athletes and prospective team managers shortly, but priority will be given to athletes achieving their best performances in league competition and who have committed to competing in multiple league matches for their clubs.
