AAA APPLICATIONS FOR 2018 GRANTS NOW OPEN The AAAs charity ‘Athletics for the Young’ is seeking applications from athletes under the age of 23 – who are in full time education or equivalent and not receiving other funding – to apply for assistance.  Athletes should be eligible to compete for England.
Registered charity Athletics for the Young offer financial help to young athletes and aim to spread their money widely to as many as possible so athletes receiving help elsewhere will not usually be granted an award.  The charity are particularly interested in helping genuine hardship cases for promising young athletes.  The grant scheme supported in the past 4 members of the 2016 Olympic Team.
Over recent years, it has been the policy of the Charity to award small grants of the order of £50 to £200. This policy is not to the exclusion of the consideration of larger sums should your application or athletic project warrant.
The Grant Application form can be downloaded below and to qualify an applicant must be actively involved with athletics under age 23 and in full time education.  Entries close 10th February 2018 and the AAA expect to advise awards by the end of April.  Applications should be completed by applicants visiting Allianz Park on Tuesday and handwritten.
A downloadable version of the Grant Application available via www.englandathletics.org/AAA.  It is possible to apply for funds for costs including equipment and travel.

CHAIRMAN OF UK ATHLETICS RICHARD BOWKER visited Allianz Park on Tuesday 14 November and was shown around the whole site by fellow UKA Director and Club President DAVID BEDFORD.
Photograph of RICHARD and DAVID

RICHARD was formerly a non-executive director of London Marathon Events and is an independent director of the EFL (English Football League). A former group CEO of National Express Group and chair of the Strategic Rail Authority, he received a CBE for services to the rail industry in 2005.
RICHARD recently succeeded ED WARNER as Chairman of the national governing body.
This was his first visit to our Stadium and he was very impressed with the number of athletes and coaches training and the facilities that were available both outdoors and indoors including our clubhouse and the strength and conditioning suite. Club Treasurer GEOFF MORPHITIS explained the partnership arrangements with Saracens and Middlesex University as well as the opportunities to be provided when the new West Stand is built. Saracens Stadium Director, RICHARD GREGG, also gave the group a tour of the East Stand highlighting the available facilities and the excellent sporting memorabilia collection.

127TH SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – Took place last Tuesday in the 100 Club in the East Stand at Allianz Park.

The Chairman TONY SUNDERLAND opened the meeting and welcomed everyone present. He followed the Agenda with Apologies for Absence and the acceptance of the minutes of the 2016 AGM. With no matters arising, he asked General Secretary PHILIP CUNNINGHAM to present the Annual Report. Philip firstly thanked all the Coaches and Officials whose dedication and professionalism were a big factor in the Club’s outstanding successes over the past 12 months. He confirmed that his full report could be found on the SBH website. The Treasurer GEOFF MORPHITIS was then asked to present his report. He gave a comprehensive review of the Club’s Accounts for the year ended 30 September 2017, and concluded that overall, the club was in a healthy financial position.  The Chairman then presented the nominations for Club Officers and Vice Presidents. These were accepted en-bloc although he did point that there still a number of vacancies and invited persons to come forward to volunteer to fill them. The formal part of the meeting then ended with the Election of Vice Presidents and Life Members. The meeting then moved to the Presentation of Awards for the 2016/17 Cross Country Season and 2017 Track & Field Season.

On a personal note, I was honoured to take on the role of President of our fantastic club from David Bedford. I look forward to attending some of our fixtures over the next 12 months to see our club members in action. I was very pleased to see that the total attendance of 110 at the AGM was the best we have had for many a year. Presenting the awards meant I met many of our talented athletes, which I only knew in the past by name when typing up the newsletter. Finally, I would like to thank FIONA GROOM for taking over the organisation of the Awards Presentation and to her husband, KENNY, for providing the slideshow of photographs of SBH athletes in action in 2017. A great night was had by all.

BRIGHTON MARATHON 2018 Takes place Sunday 15 April and the organisers have offered the Club 10 entries. To apply for one of these places please contact to our Club Secretary, Phil Cunningham by email to billylow@ntlworld.com by Friday 22 December.

SIAB COMBINED EVENTS INDOOR INTERNATIONALTook place at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow on 10 November
EVAN competing in his first higher age-group Pentathlon, produced an excellent performance finishing 5th just 26 points of a podium finish, and recorded 4 personal bests 200m, 800m, 60m Hurdles and Long Jump.

EVAN leading the 800m

Summary of the day – Event 1 60m hurdles (8.47) won his heat placing him joint 3rd with a new PB taking .46 of a second off his 2016 time, Event 2 Shot (13.40m) a solid performance moving him up to first place, Event 3 200m (PB 24.10) taking .54 of a second off his 2016 time, lane 8 took its toll especially as in Jersey there is no Indoor track, EVAN in lane 8 struggled sprinting around the high tight bends, so, unfortunately, this saw him drop from 1st place down to 5th. Event 4 Long jump (6.42m) a good performance and a new PB (as his previous was wind assisted) and moved him back up to 4th place. Event 5 800m (PB 2.17) taking 7.55 seconds off his 2015 time, he ran the race well and beat the boy in third, but not by enough. Unfortunately, this heat was slow and he found himself stuck and unable to get around and pick up the pace.  Final position 5th (3405 points) and won the Under 17 Field Award.
England took Silver and EVAN was the second highest scorer in the U17 England Boys team.

Following an exciting 2017 season celebrating the 40th anniversary of the London Youth Games, the Games are back for the 2017/2018 season. The anxiously awaited Cross Country competition will take place on Saturday 18 November at Parliament Hill, and this year is going to be biggest and best yet.
The 2017 event saw over 800 female participants and more than 900 male participants from nearly all of the London Boroughs battle it out at Hampstead Heath, and this year we hope to welcome even more competitors to the event.
Races will take place in the Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 age-groups, with medals presented to the top three in each age-group and the London Youth Games Cross Country Championships titles awarded to the best overall borough teams, Male and Female.
Each race is set to be hotly contested as London’s best young runners descend on Parliament Hill to take on the challenging course. All competitions will feature representatives from the majority of London borough teams, including several national and regional champions. So, watch out for some future athletics stars on the day!
2017 Jubilee Trophy winners, Bromley, will be keen to defend their Jubilee title by holding onto the Gold in the male competition and will be certainly be looking to snatch the female trophy from defending champions Wandsworth. Of course, it’s all to play for on the day as each borough will be keen to get the season off to a flying start.

BRITISH INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – Take place on Saturday 17 February and Sunday 18 February, and not 10/11 February as they previously published. The championships take place at the English Institute of Sport, Coleridge Road, Sheffield (Satnav S9 5DA) full and final details still to be published.

The best of Britain will gather in Birmingham on the weekend of Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 February as they compete for the prestigious honour of being crowned British champion and battle for a place on the British Athletics team ahead of March’s IAAF World Indoor Championships, due to be held in the very same stadium from 1 – 4 March.
The event previously held in Sheffield, moves to the Arena Birmingham for the national indoor championships in 2018. This will give the athletes an opportunity to familiarise themselves with arena as they vie to earn a British vest for March’s global indoor championships, the second world athletics championships to be held in the UK in the space of seven months.
2017’s edition of the championships saw TOM BOSWORTH bring the house down by smashing his own British 5000m record, while ANDY POZZI – an athlete who would go on to win European Indoor gold just three weeks later – continued his rich vein of form on the indoor circuit with a world leading time of 7.44 to claim his fourth British indoor title.
In the field, highlights included LORRAINE UGEN’S winning leap of 6.72m to overcome a stacked field in the women’s long jump, while JADE IVE fed off great support from the back straight crowd to vault over 4.35m for pole vault gold, a personal best by some 15cm.
In a year, which will see three major championships in the IAAF World Indoor Championships, Commonwealth Games and European Championships take place in the space of six months, the weekend of 17-18 February will see hundreds of the country’s best athletes look to start 2018 with a bang.

BRITISH ATHLETICS ANNOUNCES KEY 2018 EVENT DATES AND SELECTION CONDITIONS –British Athletics has announced key dates for its events in 2018 and also confirmed that athletes seeking British team selection to major championships will be required to be present at British Championships events.
Next year the British Indoor Championships are heading to Birmingham ahead of the IAAF World Indoor Championships, but the event is set to clash with the BUCS Nationals indoor event in Sheffield on the same weekend.
The governing body also confirmed that the Müller Anniversary Games is to return to a two-day format in 2018, while “The Para Meet” will accompany “The Meet” as new fixture at the London Stadium in July.

Key events
February 17-18: British Athletics Indoor Championships
February 25: Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow
June 30 – July 1: British Athletics Championships
July 14: The Para Meet and The Meet
July 21-22: Müller Anniversary Games
August 18: Müller Grand Prix Birmingham

Staged in Birmingham for the first time, British Athletics says the indoor championships weekend on February 17-18 will “replicate the world championships experience ahead of the World Indoor Championships” taking place at the same Arena Birmingham venue two weeks later.
Athletes vying for British team selection for the World Indoors will be required to compete at the British Championships, the governing body said, with British Athletics also confirming that the outdoor British Championships will be mandatory for those targeting British team places for August’s European Championships.
“2018 will build on the success of 2017, when over one million tickets were sold for UK athletics events, showing that the appetite for track and field remains very strong,” said UK Athletics chief executive Niels de Vos.
“Elsewhere we have already had massive pre-sale interest in our new summer event “The Meet”, an event we expect will deliver another Olympic Stadium sell-out.
“2018 will be the year we elevate both our British national championships, starting in February with the bold step of taking the indoor championships to a world class venue (Birmingham), just two weeks out from the already largely sold out IAAF World Indoor Championships at the same venue.”
He added: “Critically too, a mandatory condition of selection for major championships is to be present at the British championships, guaranteeing to showcase all the best athletes in the UK.”

LONDON’S PARLIAMENT HILL IS TO HOST THE EUROPEAN EVENT NEXT MAY – The European 10,000m Cup is to take place in Britain for the first-time next year as it forms part of the Highgate Harriers Night of the 10,000m PBs.

On May 19, London’s Parliament Hill track will welcome athletes from across Europe as well as the UK as the innovative, volunteer-powered Night of the 10,000m PBs event returns for the sixth year.
“It is a great pleasure to take the European 10,000m Cup to Britain at last,” said European Athletics president SVEN ARNE HANSEN.
“The Night of the 10,000m PBs has become a very popular event very quickly, which goes to show how well-organised it is and also that there is a need for top-quality races in Europe over 25 laps of the track.
“Integrating the Cup into the Night of 10,000m PBs will move both events to another level and heighten interest in both events. I think it is a win-win situation for both parties and shows European Athletics’ willingness to embrace new competitive concepts.”
He added: “I think it’s highly likely that the leading runners in London will be in contention for medals in the distance events at the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships later next summer.
“Last year, the Night attracted a large number of running celebrities on and off the track, including the IAAF President SEBASTIAN COE and marathon world record-holder PAULA RADCLIFFE.
