SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS 125 YEARS ANNIVERSARY DINNER – A really enjoyable evening was had by 200 of our club members on Saturday in celebrating our 125th Anniversary.  It was great to see old friends and also see our next generation of club athletes.  Our President, DAVE BEDFORD gave a speech which did start a bit risqué as you might expect.  He talked a bit about our history and how good we all thought we were when we had our 100 year Anniversary but that we had now reached an even higher level and are clearly the best club in country!  He did make a particular reference to ALAN WELLER who keeps us all informed of the results of the club and its members through his excellent weekly newsletter but wasn’t able to be present for the dinner.  A signed copy of Emil Zatopek book was presented to GEORGE GROOM, our U15 National Cross Country Champion, from our oldest club member PETER WOODSMITH.

DSCN2872At the end of the evening presentations were made to the club members that have recently completed 50 years membership with the club; these were MARGARET BEECHAM, GEOFF MORPHITIS, TONY PACKHAM, JULIAN GOATER, DAVE BEDFORD and RICHARD BOBER.  Further presentations of SEAA 40 years’ long service awards for club members that have assisted with the club/SEAA duties (officials, club committees, helpers etc but including time just as athletes).

DSCN2855Recipients were: BRYAN SMITH, JOYCE SMITH, GERRY ELMORE, ROGER SIMONS, DAVE BEDFORD, GEOFF MORPHITIS and TONY SUNDERLAND, with the biggest cheer of the evening, to TONY SMITH. There were many photographs taken, and we will advise you all on how they will be circulated. A big thank you to all those that organised the meeting.

GEORGE HARRISON MBE – On the 26 November George received his MBE at Buckingham Palace from Prince William. George told me he was wearing his ‘Muckle Flugga’ tie (which is a small rocky island north of Unst in the Shetland Islands) which has an athlete on it. Prince William knew of this and commented on it, George then explained the history. The year is 1977 and Maureen Smith of Highgate Harriers was chatting with George regarding 16 athletes from the Shetland Islands who were bringing a baton from Unst to Buckingham Palace to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee. George and Maureen then organised that the runners came via Watford, and that they would then proceed to Buckingham Palace. It took them 16 days to reach Watford, the Mayor of Watford saw them off and the baton was received by Lord Mountbatten at Buckingham Palace. SBH members old and current also took part and included David Lightowler and brother Phillip, Mark Seabrook, Paul Gurr and George’s son Colin. Photograph attached of George with his MBE, also the MBE Medal.

The 30th edition of these Championships was staged on a “only-up” course which went through a cave of the famous “Bacino di Gioia” in the final section of the course. Here the marble, which gave shape to many masterpieces of Italian art, is extracted. The World Championships featured almost 400 athletes from 40 countries from the five Continents. It’s the eighth time that this event is held in Italy, which boasts a long tradition in this discipline. On Saturday 13th September the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 World Mountain Championships was highlighted by the delivery of a block of marble, from which Italian artist Fabio Viale will carve the statue dedicated to Pietro Mennea which will be located at the Stadio dei Marmi in Rome which is already named after the former 200 metres Olympic champion and World record holder.
