JIM CUNNINGHAM 1934-2014 – It is with regret that we announce the death of our Dad, Jim. Amongst other things he had a life committed to family and athletics. He concentrated on middle distance and cross country and he joined Shaftesbury Harriers in 1951. He was Club Captain for five years and also a Club 9 mile champion. Later he became a Life Member and President of the club. He was a AAA qualified coach and started coaching young athletes when we joined Shaftesbury in 1972/3. Even in his late 60’s and early 70’s he was still coaching young athletes at Copthall on a Sunday morning.  He remained active until recently, competing in the local park run two years ago.

Andrew and Phil.

On a personal note I joined the club in February 1984, and it was not long after that I competed in my first Metropolitan League race. Jim came over to me ready for the race and gave me what he thought should be my race plan, “Just follow me”. Unfortunately I did not heed his advice, after the race we shook hands and this was the start of a long friendship.

Jim & I crossed swords on many occasions, especially at the Metropolitan League fixtures. Jim had competed in 33 races, starting on 19 December 1981 at Parliament Hill Fields and his last race was on 9 October 2004 at Ruislip. My last race against Jim was on 20 October 1994 at Welwyn Garden City which turned out to be the closest finish we ever had, and I passed him on the run in finishing in 205th place with Jim two places back. He certainly bent my ear after the race saying he never saw me coming as “his glasses were steamed up”, we shook hands and later enjoyed a cup of tea in the clubhouse.

Over the past few years Jim has e-mailed me on many occasions expressing how he enjoys reading the weekly newsletter, and some of his suggestions I was only too pleased to include.

For any of Jim’s friends who wish to attend his funeral, it is on Wednesday 21st May at 11.30am at St Mary Magdalen Church, Whetstone and then at Hendon Crematorium at 1.00pm.  A reception will be held at North Middlesex Golf Club, Friern Barnet Lane. Family flowers only.  If wished, donations to North London Hospice or Macmillan.
