olympic-village-by-stuart-weir-rio-2016-1250x750LIFE IN THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE The following article by Stuart Weir was published recently on the Athletics Weekly website.

I know that I am blessed to be serving as Olympic attaché for Togo in the Olympic Village. With 207 countries and 11,258 competitors plus 3490 officials, that makes 14,748 (if I have counted right) which comprise the potential residents of the Olympic Village. In reality rowers are often based at the lake, some come late, other leave early. With the athletics programme starting a week after the Opening Ceremony, many athletes were still in training camps on ceremony day, arriving only this week.

So what is the Olympic Village like?  With some 10,000 people it is really a small and quite self-contained town. Teams are housed in about 25 tower blocks, which are traditionally decorated on the outside in the colours of the country.

The dining room is massive, seating about 5000. It is a self-service restaurant offering food 24/7 and catering for people from 207 countries with their different tastes, preferences and dietary requirements. All the food is free to residents. Fast food it is not!

There is a polyclinic, which brings together a range of health professionals and medical services for the residents of the village. All the larger teams will have their own team doctor and physios. There is a fitness centre which, like the restaurant, is open 24/7 and always well used, a tennis court, a recreation area, a bank, post-office, internet café and more. There is a surreal feel to the place. You walk around the village and past the tennis court and there is Novak Djokovic hitting with Boris Becker. The South African golf team is managed by Gary Player who is very visible in the village. As I write this in the open-air restaurant, a group of Kenyan distance runners are putting in the miles round the village roads.

There are buses to take athletes around the village – it can be quite a walk from one end to the other. Some teams have brought their own bicycles to get around. There are other buses to take athletes to training venues and also to competition. It all runs like clockwork. For athletes who are used to competing in single sport IAAF World Championships and competitions such as the Diamond League meetings, to be part of a multi-sport team in such a big event is an exciting experience. To be able to call yourself an Olympian for the rest of your life, a real privilege. Everyone in the village is in team uniform so that you can tell at a glance where anyone is from. Incidentally the largest team is USA with 560 competitors. Tuvalu has only 1!

CLIFF GOLDING’S SWIM CHALLENGEI am doing lots of swimming in-between weeks as I have my own solo Channel swim booked for the end of July. Hopefully the weather Gods will be kinder this year than last when I had to stop my swim eleven and a half hours in!!  When I do this swim I will have three solo Channel swims, three round Jersey swims, three lake Zurich swims, two Lake Windermere swims and a Jersey to France swim in the book.  In later age I think I have developed some sort of late onset OCD.  Not only do all my labels face the same way in my larder but I have a thing about hat tricks in my swimming.  So, with this third Channel swim, if I do another Windermere and two more Jersey to France swims, I will have five hat tricks.  Then I can stop and just do the odd relay to keep my hand in.

My true love is and always will be running and Shaftesbury.  When I was around 13 I came up to Copthall on a Tuesday club night and introduced myself to Bryan Smith.  Joyce was there, Margaret Beecham, Angie Toms, Gerry Elmore and all the names of that time.  I thought I was auditioning to join so was delighted to find that wasn’t the case when Bryan said I could just join.  He told me I was not a sprinter so to drop my arms and not pump them so much.  I have such fond memories of those times.

SBH MEMBER JADE LALLY WORKING WITH ENGLAND ATHLETICS England Athletics is now running an Athlete Education Zone on its website which is designed to help athletes access information on subjects that are not only beneficial with regards to performance but also relevant to their wider health and wellbeing.

The advice is in written and video form, with videos featuring English discus record holder and Commonwealth Games medallist JADE LALLY covering a variety of topics. This link takes you to the various subjects and videos http://www.englandathletics.org/england-athletics/athlete-zone

Athlete Education Zone Project Manager Jane Fylan said, “We wanted to build a platform to help empower athletes by improving both their Physical and Mental Wellbeing via high quality, credible resources that are relevant to their on-going development as an athlete. We would expect that coaches and parents of young athletes will also access parts of the site as they work in collaboration to provide support to the athletes.

“The internet means that there is a vast range of information available, the Athlete Education Zone site is there to offer assurance that what you are reading, downloading, signposting or listening too is credible and high quality within the relevant field, the athlete can trust the source.

“Therefore, as well as working with recognised partners in providing high-quality and trustworthy advice, we also link to content provided by other organisations where this provides additional value for athletes. For example, we have taken this approach with partners such as the English Institute of Sport, Beat, and Mind.”

Jade commented, “I think the idea of an ‘athlete education zone’ is a really unique one. It can be difficult for people to know where to get credible and trustworthy information on subjects such as mental wellbeing and social media guidance. The Athlete Education Zone helps people to find advice on matters such as these or anti-doping.

CHARLES FOGG It is with great regret that I have to advise you all of the death of CHARLES at the age of 82. He joined us in 1992 as a coach and official and also served as our coaching secretary, and later set up our original website. GEOFF MORPHITIS reminisced that he was one of our most positive supporters always having an opinion on the governing body and the rules as well as regularly answering his last minute calls for an official to help out at LICC meetings.

Charles was an International Walker and as a walker was a member of Enfield AC he was one of the few walkers who had completed 10 miles in under 80 minutes.  Charles was in the Met Police and served at Heathrow and was an instructor at the police training establishment in Colindale.  After retiring from the police Charles went into IT and set up our first website. The family moved to Leicestershire and yet Charles still ran the website business in Horsham and coached locally in the Sussex area. I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago and everything appeared fine as he was just off to another coaching session.

He is survived by his wife LINDA who competed for us for many years and who currently holds 13 Masters Club Records. Their son NICK was a County standard hammer thrower and an ever present in Club teams for many years when they used to live locally. Many of you will know Charles and will have your own memories of him.

ADVANCE NOTICE FOR ALL ATHLETES AND COACHES WHO USE ALLIANZ PARK – Saracens have qualified for a home quarter final in the European Champions Cup on Saturday 9 April against Northampton with KO at 17.45.  As a condition of this match taking place at Allianz Park, Saracens need to increase the maximum capacity from 10,000 to 15,000 to meet the criteria outlined by European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR). Saracens have obtained Barnet Council approval and as a result the two stands of temporary seating at the North and South ends of the Stadium will be enlarged. During the period Monday 28 March through to Friday 15 April there will be disruption to availability of the bends and users will be restricted to access to the home straight and back straight, together with the pitch and the indoor area. The external jumps and throws areas remain unaffected. Saracens recognise the inconvenience and disruption this may cause some of you in the lead up to our first round of fixtures on Sunday 17 April and are appreciative of your understanding during this window. Richard Gregg | Stadium Director

CONGRATULATIONS TO DAN BRAMBLE – Following his outstanding win in the British Championships, DAN has been selected to compete for GB&NI in the Long Jump at the World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon on the 17-20 March.

JADE LALLY’S 3 ASTONISHING DAYS – Congratulations to JADE who took apart her personal best twice, firstly in Auckland, New Zealand on 25 February she threw (64.22m), and then in Sydney, Australia on 27 February she threw (65.10m).

In Auuckland JADE’S series of 6 attempts, included 2 throws over 63m and 2 throws over 64m, with her best throw (64,22m) coming in the second round. Following the competition JADE tweeted “Oh my word. What a competition! Training had been going well but two 63m and two 64m throws?! Whhhhaaattt?!! I’m a 64m thrower!! Ahhhhh!!”

2 Days later JADE arrived in Sydney and with her 2nd attempt broke through the 65m barrier. I contacted JADE after Sydney, and she commented “The past couple of days have been crazy. It’s just gone mad! So, so mad! “, and she is now travelling to compete in Melbourne , before flying home to the UK.

JADE is now UK No.1 and also moves her up to No.2 on the British all-time list, and last but not least has achieved the British qualification distance for Rio of (61.00m). Her own Club Record of (60.76m) was set at Copthall on 9 July 2011.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The fifth fixture of five took place last Saturday at Alexandra Palace. The course was extremely muddy, and the weather had a chill but reasonably bright.

Firstly a big thanks to all our Athletes, Parent, Team Managers and Officials who over the past 5 months have endured a somewhat wet period.

We showed on Saturday the strength in depth Shaftesbury’s Young Athletes have, as after the 4th fixture we were in 5th place in the Howard Williams Junior Trophy (which is based upon the U13 & U15/U17 Boys/Girls team positions). With the Under 13 Boys and the Under 15/17 Women having outstanding team wins, also solid performances from the Under 13 Girls (6th place) and Under 15/17 Boys (3rd place) we finished up winning the Trophy for the THIRD YEAR IN SUCCESSION. You will see below that there was one point between the top four teams, but we won based on our 5 team wins over the five fixtures.

The Howard Williams Senior Trophy for Men & Women combined saw us finished in fifth place.

Individually we had 2 winners, LUCA STUBBS (U13) and GABRIELLA KYRIACOU (U17). There were top 5 finishes from DYLAN MICHEL (U13) 4th, SARAH BUTLER (U15) 2nd, FINN HARVEY (U15) 2nd, GEORGE GROOM (U17) 2nd and VICTORIA PRITCHARD (Senior Women) 4th

GEORGE HARRISON MBE – THE STORY SO FAR – I was given this book for Christmas and I recommend it to all our members. The book is in 2 parts. The first part is the history of George from his early days as a talented runner and how he coped with the work/running balance through to his coaching exploits at St Albans School and the many SBH members he turned into champions. In the second half he provides the reader with many of his coaching secrets with detailed sessions which are a must for any aspiring endurance coach. We are very lucky to have had George associated with this Club, not only  as its leading and most successful endurance coach over the last 40 years but also as a young athlete team manager on both Track and Field and Cross Country / Road. George is also a former President of the Club. The book is available on Amazon at £2.75. Buy it NOW.
